Muskegon Community College’s Center for Experiential Learning is has planned a trip to Europe, focusing on various battle sites of World War II. Perfect for history buffs, the 10-day journey begins in London, England and culminates in Paris, France in June 2017.

“Operation Overlord: Follow Eisenhower’s Armies from England to France” covers the planning and launch of the D-Day Invasion, and combines traditional sightseeing with historical points of interest in London, Portsmouth, Normandy and Paris. The trip is designed by American historian Stephen E. Ambrose, who wrote the best-selling books Band of Brothers, D-Day: June 6, 1944 and Undaunted Courage.

The trip is a major highlight of the Center, which in past years has offered shorter, less expensive historical-themed excursions to Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Pullman National Historical Site, Cantigny Museum and Park, Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Mammoth Cave and the Bourbon Trail, and the Henry Ford Museum.

“We decided to try the international trip because many of our core constituents have expressed a desire to see the historical venues associated with World War II,” said George Maniates, MCC history and experiential learning instructor. “It’s a natural outgrowth of the Center’s desire to provide experiential learning opportunities to the community.”

Although the trip starts in London, three days are allotted to cover the Normandy, France area where D-Day battles of Utah and Omaha Beaches and numerous other places of interest will be explored.

The cost of this extensive, historically diverse tour is $2,950 per person, excluding airfare. For more information, email George Maniates at George.maniates@muskegoncc.edu. The full itinerary of the trip can be viewed here.
