From 1997 to 2003, McDermott served as the Head Basketball Coach at Lake Superior State University. In his tenure McDermott built one of the most competitive teams in Laker history. His 2000-01 team went 18-9, spent eight weeks in the Great Lakes Regional rankings, participated in the GLIAC tournament for the second time in school history, and finished the season ranked #10 in the Great Lakes Regional. In 2001-02 his team went 17-11, defeated three top 25 opponents, participated in back-to-back GLIAC tournaments for the first time in school history and produced the first back-to-back winning seasons in 16 years. McDermott then served as Head Basketball Coach/Associate Athletic Director at the University of Dubuque in Iowa. While at Dubuque, McDermott resurrected a program that was coming off a two-win season and produced the first winning season in 13 years as well as the first conference tournament appearance in school history.
