The 18th ranked Muskegon Community College Jayhawks defeated Lansing Community College tonight by a score of 83-77 in Lansing, MI. It is the 11th win in a row for the Jayhawks, who are tied at the top of the conference with Mid Michigan Community College with 4 games left in the regular season.
The Jayhawks got off to a pretty good start offensively, led by Delaney Bolles (Reeths-Puffer HS) who scored 25 points in the first half. MCC was a step slow on defense however, which allowed Lansing CC to stay within reach via the 3 point shot. Lansing came out with double and triple teams on Bolles in the second half, but that let Iyana Brown (Fruitport HS) go to work and she responded with 18 points in the second half. The Jayhawks got a solid definsive effort from Sam Taylor (Cedar Springs HS) who limited LCC’s leading scorer to 11 points on the night.
Bolles finished with a career high 38 points and added 16 boards, Brown had 23 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks and Elysia Mattos (Reeths-Puffer HS) was also in double digit scoring with 12 points and 13 assists.
“This was an enormous win for us because Lansing is always a tough place to play and they have some really good athletes,” said Head Coach Amanda Parker. “I am impressed with how Delaney and Iyana completely carried us on their backs tonight and as freshmen, showed true leadership. This team faced some adversity, but they kept pushing through and found a way to win. I am incredibly proud of all of them.”
The Jayhawks are now 11-1 in the Western Conference and 18-5 overall. Next up is a trip to Glen Oaks Community College on Wednesday, 2/21 for a 5:30 pm contest.
