The Jayhawk Women’s Basketball team dropped a close game to Macomb Community College 64-60 in the opening round of the Skippers New Years Classic at St. Clair County Community College.
Both teams started slow with the 1st quarter ending at 11-7 in favor of Macomb CC. The Monarchs picked up the scoring in the 2nd quarter with 22 but the Jayhawks continued to struggle as Macomb took a 33-17 half time lead. Muskegon woke up in the second half and outscored Macomb by 12 but it wasn’t enough to overcome the first half deficit. “It was a tough start to today’s game,” said Head Coach Jason Cooper. “We had a good second half, but you can’t fall behind by 16 points against a good team and expect to win. We almost did but didn’t have enough in the tank.” MCC was led in scoring by McKena Wilson (Calvary Christian) with 15 points and 4 rebounds followed by Arrionna Williams (Reeths-Puffer) with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Ty’veonna Davis (Muskegon) was also in double digits with 10 points and Remi Sponseller (Farwell) grabbed a team high 10 rebounds.
The Jayhawks will face host St. Clair County Community College on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
