The Jayhawk Women’s Basketball team opened conference play with a 63-41 victory over the visiting Delta College Pioneers.
MCC started slow against the Pioneer’s 1-2-2 defense but ended the 1st quarter up 12-8. Both teams picked up the offense in the 2nd quarter but the Jayhawks took a 29-23 lead into the locker room at the half. The Jayhawk defense stepped up in the 3rd quarter and held Delta to 4 points and they cruised to the win. “It was a very good win for us tonight,” said Coach Jason Cooper. “It was a team effort with better ball movement and when we move the ball we are a better team”. The Jayhawks were led by Arrionna Williams (Reeths-Puffer) with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Newcomer Kaitlynn Bennett (Fremont) had a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Ty’veonna Davis (Muskegon) also had a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. McKena Wilson (Calvary Christian) finished with 11 points.
The Jayhawks start conference play 1-0 and evened their overall record to 7-7. They will host Bay College on Saturday, 1/20 with tip off scheduled for 1:00 pm.
