Will Roberson Jr. Commits to Play Basketball at MCC
The MCC men’s basketball program received great news on June 28 with a verbal commitment from Muskegon High’s starting point guard Will Roberson Jr. In 2013-14, Muskegon High enjoyed a perfect 28-0 state championship season. Roberson was joined by friends, family and his high school coach Keith Guy when he signed his letter of intent.
“We could not be more excited about Will signing with us,” said MCC Head Coach Dave Schlump. “We have heavily recruited Will since the beginning of the year; he’s an unbelievable basketball player and young man. He is tough as nails and comes from an excellent high school program.”

Ottawa Hills Standout Jordai Lewis Signs with MCC Men’s Basketball
Jordai Lewis,a 6’7″ 215 lbs basketball standout at Ottawa Hills High School, will attend MCC next fall and play for the the Jayhawk men’s basketball squad.
MCC Head Coach Dave Schlump and Assistant Coach Jim Booth welcomed Lewis to the Jayhawk Nation on signing day. “He’s a great addtiton to your team and we are looking forward to him playing with us next year,” said Booth.
Men’s Basketball Closes Season with Heartbreaking Home Overtime Loss
The men’s basketball squad lost a back-and-forth overtime thriller 81-79 to visiting Jackson College on Feb. 27 in which the winner advanced to the post-season and the loser’s season came to an end.
“It’s always tough to lose a game like that but give credit where it’s do,” said MCC Head Coach Dave Schlump. “Jackson made the plays at the end of the game that they needed to to win and we didn’t. Our hats are off to them. Our kids played hard and gave everything they had – the same way they did all year long. And we’re proud of our group of young men. Sometimes things don’t end the way you hoped they would but that’s life. It was a tough locker room tonight but I am still proud of my guys.”
The Jayhawks came ready to play and took a 40-35 halftime lead, offsetting early foul trouble and torrid Jackson three-point shooting with a 15-of-16 performance at the free throw line. MCC’s freshman forward Turean Conner (Chicago, IL/Kenwood) scored 12 of his 19 points in the first half.
In the second half, the game provided plenty of excitement. The two squads matched points but MCC maintained a slim lead until just under two minutes left, when Jackson took a 69-68 edge. Jayhawk sophomore guard Maquise Hatter’s(Holland, MI/West Ottawa) three-pointer put the host back on top 71-69 with less than a minute in regulation. Chase Casebolt (Montague,MI/Montague) stole an ensuing Jackson pass and tossed the ball to Hatter, who was fouled. Hatter hit one of his two attempts. A successful three-pointer by Jackson’s Jairen Hunt in the final seconds sent the game into OT.
Overtime was much of the same as each team exchanged tough buckets and key stops. With under 18 seconds left, Hatter’s lay-up tied the game 79-79. On an even tougher shot than his regulation equalizer, Hunt hit a fade away bank shot from the top of the key and with an MCC defender in his face to seal the visitors’ 81-79 win.
MCC was led by Hatter with23 points. Jake Anderson (Garnt, MI/Grant) scored 19 and grabbed eight rebounds. Turean Conner scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds despite foul trouble and fouling out in OT. Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern) cored 12 points. Chase Casebolt grabbed nine boards and make key plays down the stretch. MCC closed the season with an 11-17 record.
Men’s Basketball Loses in a Shootout
Muskegon Community College lost a high scoring affair against Ancilla College Monday, Feb. 24 in Donaldson, Ind. 94-85. Sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) had a great game going 8-9 from the field and scoring 21 of his game high 27 points in the second half.
Sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) also played well scoring 19 points and 10 assists. Sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) shot just below 50% from three-point range scoring 17 points. Muskegon went into half time down 49-36.
The second half was an offensive clinic; both teams combined for 103 second half points. The Jayhawks were able to get inside scoring from Anderson and freshman Turean Conor (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) as well as hitting threes from the outside. Ancilla inside presence was the difference in the game and proved to the difference. The Jayhawks play next at home in Bartels-Rodes Gymnasium against Jackson CC Wednesday, Feb. 26
Men’s Basketball Upsets #1 Glen Oaks CC
The Jayhawks played at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium Wednesday, Feb 19 and beat the first place team in the Western Conference, Glen Oaks CC in dramatic fashion 84-83. Freshman Conor Bradley (Newaygo, MI/Newaygo HS) hit a baseline floater from a sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) assist as time expired to get the win the game. The Jayhawks were able to go blow for blow with Glen Oaks the entire first half. Glen Oaks out rebounded MCC in the first half, but MCC was able to do an outstanding job on not turning the ball over with only three first half turnovers to Glen Oaks’ 11. MCC was able to convert at the free throw line shooting 12-14; keeping them in striking distant.
The second half both teams traded baskets back and forth. In the final moments Glen Oaks went 1-2 at the free throw line to take the lead 83-82. With 17 seconds left MCC got the rebound off the missed free-throw and called timeout at half court with 9.2 seconds left. The Jayhawks inbounded the ball and Glen Oaks defensive disrupted Coach Schlump play call, instincts took over the Jayhawks as Hatter drove the lane and fed a perfect pass to Bradley. He was able to get off a contested floater as time ran out for an exciting Jayhawk victory.
“This was a great win for us as we continue to fight to get into the post season. Credit goes out to our guys who fought hard every second and were able to answer the bell against a tough team in Glen Oaks.” said Head Coach Dave Schlump. “We had guys, both starters and off the bench, step up big. Our guys answered the bell and earned this win. It was just a great team effort.”
The Jayhawks look to continue their good play against Ancilla College in Donaldson, Ind. on Monday, Feb. 24.
Men’s Basketball Crushes Kellogg CC
The Jayhawks traveled to Battle Creek, Mich. to play Kellogg CC on Saturday, Feb. 15. MCC was able to get a dominate road win against Kellogg CC 83-66. The Jayhawks got lead midway through the first half and never looked back. MCC was able to get a comfortable half time lead 39-26 and led by 17 midway through the second half.
Tyiwan Jones led MCC in scoring with 26 points. Sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) scored 18 points while Jake Anderson scored 11 and Chase Casebolt scored 10 coming off the bench. Kellogg was led by their two leading scorers Nathan Taylor and Luke Heide both with 19 points.
The Jayhawks will look to extend their winning streak this Wednesday, Feb, 19 against Glenn Oaks CC at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium.
Grand Rapids CC Easily Handles Men’s Basketball 99-63
The Grand Rapids CC men’s basketball team defeated MCC 99-63 on Wednesday, Feb. 12. No details were reported.
Men’s Basketball Shows Signs of Fatigue During Fourth Game in Eight Days
MCC played host to the Stars of Lansing CC tonight, Monday, Feb. 10 in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium. Despite a 33-26 halftime lead and a great defensive effort, the Jayhawks gave up 45 second half points in a 71-63 loss.
MCC came out and was able to maintain the lead throughout the first half being up as many 12 with four minutes left. However, during the second half the Jayhawks showed signs of fatigue having played 4 games in eight days as Lansing CC were able score a lot of points in transition for some easy fast break points. MCC was down just six with four and half to go but just couldn’t seal the deal.
The Jayhawks struggled shooting the ball, but sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) shot the ball extremely well scoring 31 points (12-16 field goals and 5-9 from 3 point range) and sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant MI, Grant HS) scored 12 points shoot 50% for the night.
The Jayhawks will be in action next this Wednesday, Feb. 12 at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium against Grand Rapids CC at 7:30pm.
Kalamazoo Valley Tops Men’s Hoops 83-61
MCC lost in a game they struggled to play their best ball. The Jayhawks played against Kalamazoo Valley CC on Saturday, Feb. 8 and lost 83-61. It was a rough outing for the Jayhawks where they shot just 34% overall and 25% from three point range.
Both teams had multiple players in foul trouble; MCC was down only four with a less than three minutes in the first half and lost their composure which started the foul trouble and allowed KVCC to extend the lead to 12 before half time. Every player for MCC got to see minutes and allowed some guys to get some valuable exposure. Sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) and sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) both had 14 points and combined for 9 rebounds and a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line.
The Jayhawks will be in action this Monday, Feb. 10 at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium against Lansing CC at 7:30pm. This game is a make-up from an earlier game canceled game due to inclement weather.
Men’s Basketball Snaps Losing Streak
MCC traveled to Benton Harbor, Mich. to play Lake Michigan College Wednesday, Feb. 5. The Jayhawks beat Lake Michigan 84-79 to snap their losing streak. The Jayhawks fell behind in the first 5 minutes of the game, but was able to gain the lead and maintain it for the rest of the game. MCC stopped a late first half run by Lake Michigan with a buzzer beater to end the half.
The Jayhawks were able to maintain a six point lead for most of the second half. MCC was up by one with under a minute left in the game. Sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) was fouled and made both free throws to put MCC up by three. After two three point attempts by Lake Michigan, MCC was fouled and again Hatter hit two more clutch free throws to ice game.
“We played very unselfish and were able to distribute the ball all game long.” said Head Coach Dave Schlump. The Jayhawks had a season high 28 assists to just 8 turnovers.
MCC was led by Hatter with 22 points and 7 assists, sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) with 20 points (4-6 3-pt), 6 assists, and 7 rebounds. Freshman Turaen Conner (Chicago, IL/Kentwood HS) scored 18 points with 8-12 shooting. The Jayhawks will be in action again this Saturday, Feb. 8 at home in Bartels-Rodes Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 3:00pm.
Ancilla Edges Men’s Basketball 80-76
The MCC men’s basketball team suffered another close loss this season, when visiting Ancilla College beat the Jayhawks 80-76 on Feb. 3.
With less than 20 seconds left in the game and down two points, MCC got a steal down but sophomore Riley Angeli’s (Saute St. Marie, MI/Saute St. Marie HS) three-point effort rimmed out. Forced to foul the remainder of the game, MCC couldn’t catch up to Ancilla..
The Jayhawks came out in the first half and went up eight points. A bad stretch of missed shots and turnovers allowed Ancilla to take a five point lead into halftime. MCC out rebounded, had more steals, blocks, points off turnovers, and made more free throws than Ancilla but was unable to get the win. MCC shot just 21.7% from behind the arc, while Ancilla shot 53.3%.
Sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) led MCC with 20 points and 7 rebounds shooting 9-15 with four impressive blocks including a blocked dunk attempt. Sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) also had 20 points. The Jayhawks will play next in Benton Harbor, Mich. against Lake Michigan College on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 pm
MCC Basketball Fans to Fight Hunger Feb. 8
Muskegon Community College will be joining with other Michigan Community College Athletic Association member institutions for the “MCCAA Hunger Games” on Saturday, Feb. 8.
Those attending the MCC vs. Kalamazoo CC women’s and men’s basketball games on Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, are asked to bring non-perishable food items with them. Their generous donations will be distributed to needy families through the local food bank.

Men’s Basketball Falls to Jackson CC
The Jayhawks suffered their sixth conference loss of the year at the hands of Jackson Community College on Wednesday, Jan. 29 in Jackson Mich. 81-76. Jackson CC had jumped out to a quick 6 point lead and was up by double digits a couple of times in the first half. The Jayhawks were able to answer the bell and quickly get the game to a two possession game down only six going into half time. Both teams came out on fire in the second half.
JCC was able to regain their double digit lead and once again the Jayhawks were able to fight their way back and this time took the lead late in the game. In the final five minutes JCC was able to secure the lead and the game with a final score of 81-76.
The Jayhawks were led by their back court of sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) with 21 points and sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) who scored a game high 26 with another great shooting performance. Sophomore Jake Anderson (grant, MI/Grant HS) was able to produce down low adding 10 points. Freshman Turean Conner (Chicago, IL/Kentwood HS) also had good presence down low grabbing eight boards to lead the Jayhawks.

Men’s Basketball Falls Short Against Glen Oaks CC
MCC Traveled to Centreville, Mich. to play Glen Oaks CC Monday, Jan. 20. The Jayhawks played its best game tonight but fell short losing to Glen Oaks 91-83. Jayhawks started slow down 18-4 early in the first half and that proved to be the big difference in the game. MCC struggled shooting the ball in the first half, but got hot and got the game to a two possession game in the second half.
The Jayhawks shooting was sparked by sophomore Riley Angeli (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/Sault Ste. Marie HS) who scored 18 off the bench. Sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) scored 20 points and sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) scored 21 points to make it an exciting game. Sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) got his first career dunk and freshman Turean Conor (Chicago, IL/Kentwood HS) played big and tough down low.
“We continue to get better and have lost a lot of close games.” said Head Coach Dave Schlump. “Down the road our guys are going to see their hard work pay dividends.” The Jayhawks will be in action Saturday, Jan. 25 at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium against Ancilla College at 3pm.
Men’s Basketball Beats Kellogg 74-55
The MCC Men’s basketball team ended its losing streak at home Saturday, Jan 18 with a great team win over Kellogg CC 74-55. Balanced scoring and hot shooting in the first half gave MCC a 16 point half time lead. MCC out rebounded Kellogg 44-38 and was able to dish out 20 assists to just 10 turnovers.
MCC was led by a trio of sophomores on both ends of the floor. Sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) scored 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL, Lansing Eastern HS) led all scorers with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. While back court teammate sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) scored 16 points on 60% shooting, 7 assists, and a steal. Other top performers for MCC were freshman Chase Casebolt (Montague, MI/Montague HS) had 9 points and freshman Turean Conner (Chicago, IL/Kentwood HS) scored 8 points and 9 rebounds.
Kellogg was led by sophmore Nathan Taylor with 15 points and a game high 18 rebounds. The Jayhawks will be in action next Monday, Jan. 20 in Centreville, MI against Glen Oaks CC at 7:30pm.
GRCC Downs Men’s Basketball
The Jayhawks traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich. Wednesday, Jan. 15 to play Grand Rapids CC. GRCC played well winning 80-56. MCC was down seven in an offensive battle in the first half 28-21, but couldn’t maintain GRCC’s pace.
MCC was led by sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) with 9 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Turaen Conor (Chicago, IL/Kentwood HS) with 13 points. MCC struggled at the free throw line, but were able to out rebound the raiders. However the Jaywaks weren’t able to keep their offensive going.
GRCC was led by Demarcus Stuckey and Courtney Hill with 16 points each. The Jayhawks will play at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium Saturday, Jan. 18 against Kellogg CC at 3pm.
Lake Michigan College Outrebounds MCC for 66-62 Victory
The Jayhawks played Lake Michigan College at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The Jayhawks continue to struggle in the rebound game and lost the turnover battle in their 62-66 loss.
MCC led at half time 28-25 with both teams struggled to score points. The Jayhawks came out strong in the second half and extended the lead to eight. But the Jayhawks got out rebounding and gave up too many turnovers and allowed Lake Mich. to get back in the game. MCC was led by an unbelievable individual effort by sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
The Jayhawks play again Saturday, Jan. 8 in Kalamazoo, Mich. against Kalamazoo Valley CC at 3 pm.
Tyiwan Jones Drops 40 Points on Lansing CC
The MCC Jayhawks traveled to Lansing, Mich. to play Lansing CC on Saturday Jan. 4. The Jayhawks lost a hard fought game 92-101. Sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) played outstanding dropping 40 points including 13-22 field goals, 8-11 for three pointers, and a prefect 6-6 from the free throw line and tried to pull MCC out of a big hole at half trailing 40-57. The Jayhawks came back and made it close a few times but couldn’t gain the led.
The Jayhawks also had three other players in double figures sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) had 13 while freshman Chase Casebolt (Montague, MI/Montague HS) and freshman Turaen Conor (Chicago, IL/Kentwood HS) both had 12 points. Lansing CC was led by a trio of guys; Tracy Edmond led Lansing with 29, Nate Lafayette had 27 points and Jeff Cain with 21.
Jayhawks were able to win the rebounding battle 43-32, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the first half deficit. MCC will be in action next Wednesday, Jan.8 at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium against Lake Michigan College. Tip-off will be at 7:30pm.
Men’s Basketball Battle tough Against Delta College
MCC’s Mens Basketball team traveled to University Center, Mich. to play Delta College on Monday, Dec. 23. The Jayhawks suffered close lost with a final score of 75-85. MCC was down by one with 2 minutes to go and couldn’t convert on their final few possessions.
The entire game went back and forth with MCC taking a one point lead into half time. The Jayhawks were able to shoot over 50% from the field and over 41% behind the arc. MCC limited themselves to only 7 turnovers for the game, but in the end the difference was Delta College free-throws going 21-28. The Jayhawks were led by their most balanced attack all year with all five starters in double figures. Sophomore Rashard Donely (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon HS) scored 15 points while sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS), freshman Chase Casebolt (Montague, MI/Montague HS), and sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) all scored 14 points. Sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern) added 12 points. Freshman Turean Conor (Chicago, IL/Kentwood HS) continues to improve his game and provide a great spark off the bench adding 6 points.

Men’s Basketball Dominate Second Half Against Grace Bible College JV
MCC traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich. to play Grace Bible College JV’s on Friday, Dec. 20. The Jayhawks came away with a 15 point victory beating Grace Bible JV 72-57. MCC struggled in the first half on both ends of the floor and were down by 5 points 30-35. The Jayhawks came out strong in the second half after a motivating half time talk from Head Coach Dave Schlump.
MCC had a balanced scoring attack led by sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) with 16 points, while sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) had 12 points, 8 rebounds, and a game high 9 assists. Sophomore Rashard Donley (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon HS) added 11 points and 7 rebounds while freshman Turean Conor (Chicago, IL/Kentwood HS) added a huge spark off the bench scoring 8 points and a game high of 12.
The Jayhawks were able to dominate the glass out rebounding Grace JV 45-30 and shot 50% from the floor. The Jayhawks will be in action next against Delta College in University City, Mich. on Monday, Dec. 23.
Men’s Basketball Defense Dominates
MCC traveled to Alpena, Mich. on Friday, Dec. 13 to play Alpena CC. The Jayhawks beat Alpena 88-73. “The score doesn’t indicate how close the game was. “ said MCC assistant coach Jim Booth. MCC was down 41-47at half then came out on fire in the second half to gain a 10 point lead.
MCC played tough defense and dominate in rebounding to get the win, MCC out rebounded Alpena 66-33, which included 21 offensive rebounds. The Jayhawks were led by freshman Chase Casebolt (Montague, MI/Montague HS) with 19 points and 13 rebounds. The Jayhawks Big Man sophomore Rasheed Donely (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon HS) dominated down low with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Alpena was led by Travon Howard with 18 points and had three other players in double figures. The Jayhawks will be in action tomorrow Saturday, Dec. 14 in Roscommon, Mich. to play Kirtland CC.
Men’s Basketball Loses in a Nail Bitter
The Jayhawks Men’s Basketball played at home Saturday, Dec. 7 in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium against Mid-Michigan College Lakers. The Jayhawks came up just short in a nail bitter 74-77.
MCC was down at half 44-33, but came back to tie the game late. The Jayhawks were lead with a balanced attack. Top scores were sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern, MI) and sophomore Rashard Donely (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon HS) each with 17 points. Freshman Chase Casebolt (Montague, MI/Montague HS) finished with 14 points and Sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) followed 13 points. The Lakers were led by guard Erick Layton with 28 points and Trevor Gernaat with 21 points.
The Jayhawks out rebounded the Lakers 40-29 and both teams struggled from the free throw line. MCC shot 56% from the line, just below the Lakers 59%. The Jayhawks will be in action Friday, Dec. 13 in Alpena, Mich. against Alpena CC.
Schoolcraft Edges Men’s Basketball for Tournament Championship
The Jayhawks were at home Nov. 30 playing in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium against Schoolcraft in the finals of their First Annual Thanksgiving Tournament. MCC lost a close hard fought game 86-84.
The Jayhawks were led by Sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) with 31 points. Sophomore Marquise Hatter shot 50% and 19 points and sophomore Rashard Donely (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon HS) followed Hatter with 18 points.
MCC got out rebounded 52-38 and lead at half time with a score of 45-34, but were unable to hold the lead. Schoolcraft was led by Terrence Coles with 43 points and 18 rebounds. The Jayhawks will be in action again at home Friday, Dec. 6 against Aquinas College JV.
Men’s Basketball Advance to Finals
MCC Men’s Basketball beat Alpena CC 94-63 at their First Annual Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 29 at Bartels-Rode Gymnasium. The Jayhawks utilized every player in a great team win.
Jayhawks were led by the outstanding shooting of sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS), who was 5-6 from beyond the arc for 18 points. Sophomore forward Rashard Donely (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon HS) was 10-14 from the field for 23 points and freshman A.J. Whittaker Northport, MI/Leyland HS) had 12 rebounds. Sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) added 22 points for a team high 6 assists.
MCC out rebounded Alpena CC 62-31 and the Jayhawk’s defense held Alpena CC to only 34% shooting. MCC takes on the Schoolcraft tomorrow night in the Championship game at 7 pm in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium.
Men’s Basketball Improve to 3-1 Overall
The Jayhawks traveled to Kalamazoo, Mich. to complete in the East/West Classic at Kalamazoo CC Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 &23.MCC dropped the first of two games to St. Clair CC 86-81. The Jayhawks bounced back to beat Alpena CC 88-58.
MCC’s first game against St. Clair the Jayhawks were led by sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) with 29 points, followed by sophomore Rashard Donely (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon HS) with 17 point, sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) with 15 points, and sophomore Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) with 11 points.
In the Alpena CC game the Jayhawks were led by Hatter with 21 points. The Jayhawks will be in action again this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29 &30 at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium for the MCC Thanksgiving Classic at 7pm.
Men’s Basketball Undefeated at 3-0
The Jayhawks played at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium Saturday, Nov. 16 against Calvin College JV. The Jayhawks won 82-77 and improved to 3-0 on the season. MCC had the advantage winning the rebounding battle 44-38.
MCC took a seven point lead going into half time, 40-33. Calvin came back in the second half to take a 5 point lead. Jayhawks got into foul trouble late in the game, but were able to regain the led with great play from freshman A.J. Whittaker (Northport, MI/Leyland HS). Whittaker stepped up and played well down low and got key rebounds down the stretch. The Jayhawks scoring was led by sophomore Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) with 20 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds and sophomore Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern HS) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Rashard Donely (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon HS) had 15 points while freshman Nick Norals (Chicago, IL/Kentwood HS) added 11 points off the bench.
The Jayhawks will be in action next at Kalamazoo Valley CC’s East West Classic. The Jayhawks will play St. Clair CC at 3pm on Friday, Nov. 22 and Alpena CC at 1pm on Saturday, Nov. 23
Unbeaten Men’s Basketball Downs Aquinas JV 85-56
MCC sophomore guard Tyiwan Jones (Chicago, IL/Lansing Eastern) posted a team-high 29 points and 15 rebounds on Thursday night, Nov. 7, to lead the unbeaten Jayhawks men’s basketball squad to an 85-56 win over the host Aquinas College JVs.
Jones connected on 7-of-10 three–pointers for MCC, which never trailed and owned a double-digit lead, as large as 34 points, for most of the contest. MCC had key contributions from sophomore point guard Marquise Hatter (Holland, MI/West Ottawa) with his 16 points and five assists. Two sophomores, 6-4 Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant) and 6-7 Rashard Donely (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon) held down the paint scoring 14 points and 16 points, respectively, while grabbing a combined 13 rebounds.
Aquinas, led by led by guard DJ Hull’s 16 points, trailed MCC 41-25 at halftime. Now 2-0 overall, MCC outrebounded Aquinas 61-31.
Men’s Basketball Opens with a Win
The Jayhawks played their season opener at home Friday Nov. 1, at Bartels-Rode Gymnasium against Grace Bible JV. MCC won 93-67 with great play from their sophomores.
Sophomore center Rashard Donely (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon HS) led the Jayhawks with 29 points. Sophomore guard Marquise Hater (Holland, MI/West Ottawa HS) played well with 20 points and 11 assists and sophomore center Jake Anderson (Grant, MI/Grant HS) was great with 9 points, 5 blocks and 9 rebounds.
“Our sophomores gave a work horse performance.” said Head Coach Dave Schlump. “Rashard played the big guy spot well. Hater had 11 assists and only 3 turnovers; a plus-8 ratio is great for his position. Anderson had 9 points and 9 rebounds, so close to a double double.”
The Jayhawks will look to make it two in a row next Thursday, Nov. 7 against Aquinas College JV in Grand Rapids, Mich. at 7:00pm
