JAYHAWK WRESTERS FINISH 9th IN THE NATION: ZACK COOPER, TYLER STENBERG AND DONAVAN FOUCHEY EARN ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
NJCAA National Wrestling Tournament – Spokane, Washington

The Muskegon Community College wrestling team earned a top ten finish at the national tournament, finishing 9th. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M won the overall team championship. Leading the way for the Jayhawks was Zachary Cooper (freshman/Whitehall/133) who wrestled back to finish third after suffering an upset in the quarterfinals. “Zachary has been so impressive all year. You see a lot of kids fold when their dreams of a championship are dashed. Zack just got more focused and challenged himself to come back and finish 3rd,” said Coach Brunger. Donavan Fouchey (freshman/Oscoda/197) and Tyler Stenberg (freshman/Reeths-Puffer/149) also garnered All-American Honors, finishing 4th and 6th respectively. “I’m very proud of this team. They are young, hard-working and tenacious,” said Brunger. “Great things are on the horizon for Muskegon Jayhawk wrestling!” Muskegon also had four other wrestlers finish just one match away from becoming All-Americans in Cody Stenberg (freshman/Reeths-Puffer/141), Lukas Gilmore (freshman/Greenville/165), Joe Sika (freshman/Whitehall/174) and Shawn Chamberlain (sophomore/Dexter/285).

JAYHAWK WRESTLING TEAM RUNNERS-UP IN THE CENTRAL DISTRICT

Triton College – River Grove, IL – NJCAA Central District Tournament

The Muskegon Community College wrestling team finished 2nd in the Central District/National Qualifier tournament on Sunday. During the competition the Jayhawks qualified 9 of the 10 weight classes for the national tournament. Lincoln College won the championship finishing 4 points ahead of the Jayhawks in the tournament scoring. “While we fell short of our goal to come in here and win the district, we are still in a good position to perform well at the national tournament,” said Coach Brunger. “We have qualified nine wrestlers and all of them will be major point scorers for us at nationals.” The team had an outstanding semifinal round sending 9 wrestlers into the championship match and one into the consolation round, building a 22 point team lead. Unfortunately, only Zack Cooper (freshman/Whitehall/133) won a match in the last round, and the lead evaporated.

Runners up finishes were Devane Dodgens (Freshman/Chippewa Hills/125), Cody Stenberg (Freshman/Reeths-Puffer/141), Tyler Stenberg (Freshman/Reeths-Puffer/149), Lukas Gilmore (Freshman/Greenville/165), Joe Sika (Freshman/Whitehall/174), Steven Malloy (Freshman/Morley-Stanwood/184), Donavan Fouchey (Freshman/Oscoda/197) and Shawn Chamberlain (Sophomore/Dexter/285).

The NJCAA National Championships will be held February 28th  March 1st in Spokane, Washington.

MUSKEGON WRESTLERS SHUT OUT TRITON COLLEGE AND UPSET LINCOLN COLLEGE
1/18/14 – Lincoln Duals – Lincoln College – Lincoln, IL

The 8th ranked Muskegon wrestling team traveled to Lincoln Illinois looking to continue their momentum in the stretch run. They did just that as they blanked the 16th ranked Triton squad and then built up a 21-0 lead against the 6th ranked Lincoln wrestlers and held on for a 27-19 victory. “We have two concerns at this stage of the season, peaking at the right time and staying healthy,” said Coach Brunger. “These guys are near peaking in performance and we are right on track, unfortunately we had a few injuries at the end of the Lincoln dual so we have our fingers crossed that we heal quickly. Regardless, we feel great about our performance, winning all ten matches against a ranked opponent and scoring an upset is definitely a great day!” The Jayhawks were led by 2-0 performances by Devane Dodgens (125/Freshman/Chippewa Hills), Zachary Cooper (133/Freshman/Whitehall), Cody Stenberg (141/Freshman/Reeths-Puffer), Elvis Peacock (149/Freshman/Chippewa Hills), Shaquill Bell (157/Sophomore/South Haven) and Mason Courtright (174/Freshman/Shelby). Tyler Stenberg (149/Freshman/Reeths-Puffer) and Joe Sika (174/Freshman/Whitehall) were both 1-0 on the day. The event ended the dual meet season for the Jayhawks. They finished with a 9-4 record and a 6th place national finish at the NWCA National Duals last weekend. Their focus now shifts to tournament scoring as they eye a regional championship and a top 5 finish in the country in February. Up next is the Alma Open on Saturday, January 25th

MCC GRAPPLERS GO 1-2 AT OLIVET DUALS: COOPER REMAINS UNDEFEATED
Olivet College – Olivet, MI – Olivet Duals – November 23rd, 2013

For the second week in a row the Jayhawk wrestling squad was the only junior college in the house. This week however, the overmatched Jayhawks were battling the best the opposing team could put on the mat in dual meets instead of a tournament format. “When Coach Brissette (Olivet head coach) emailed me a month ago asking who we wanted to wrestle my response was simple, we’ll wrestle anyone,” said Coach Brunger. “We are very talented, but really young. In order to learn we need to be exposed for our mistakes against more seasoned juniors and seniors.” The 19th ranked Jayhawks wrestled Olivet in round one and lost 31-9 winning just two matches in the contest. In the second round MCC faced Trine University and won all nine contests including an exciting first period pin by 133 pounder Zack Cooper (Freshman/Whitehall) over Trine University junior Brandon Preston who is ranked 8th at 133 pounds in NCAA div. III. In the last round MCC dropped a tough dual against Indiana Tech who is ranked 11th in the NAIA as a team by a score of 24-12. “Against Indiana Tech we had many opportunities to win matches that could have turned the tide. We really got better as the day went on and we learned a lot. We will be improved and ready when we get back on that mat at Niagara,” Brunger added. 7th ranked Zack Cooper remained unbeaten on the season, stretching his record to 13-0. Other wrestlers with winning records on the day were 165lb Lukas Gilmore (Freshman/Greenville), 184lb Mason Courtright (Freshman/Shelby), 197lb Donavan Fouchey (Freshman/Oscoda) and 285lb Shawn Chamberlain (Sophomore/Dexter) who were all 2-1 on the day. Full results are listed below.

THREE MCC JAYHAWK WRESTLERS CROWNED CHAMPIONS AT TRINE UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL
Trine University – Angola, IN – Trine University Invitational – November 16th, 2013

The 19th ranked Jayhawk wresters traveled to Trine University as the only junior college amongst a field of NCAA Division III and NAIA schools. Undeterred the Jayhawks claimed three individual championships and four runner-up finishes and had eight wrestlers place in top four. “The crazy thing is we gave a few starters the weekend off to heal up and spend time with family, we only entered wrestlers in eight of the ten weights and we still performed this well,” said Coach Mark Brunger. “That is a credit to our training and the overall dedication of the team to make one another better each and every day.” The Jayhawks were opening eyes all day as they sent seven wrestlers to the finals in six out of the eight weight classes they entered. For the second week in row teammates Lukas Gilmore (Freshman/Greenville) and Shaquill Bell (Sophomore/South Haven) made the finals at 165 lbs. Gilmore won the championship as Bell defaulted due to a swollen eye. “Both of these guys have just been dynamite so far this year,” exclaimed Brunger. Not to be outdone Zachary Cooper (Freshman/Whitehall) took home the crown at 133 lbs. and Donavan Fouchey (Freshman/Oscoda) did the same at 197 lbs. Joining Bell as runners-up was Cody Stenberg (Freshman/Reeths-Puffer) at 141 lbs., Tyler Stenberg (Freshman/Reeths-Puffer) at 149 lbs., and Joseph Sika (Freshman/Whitehall) at 174 lbs. Chad Maks (Freshman/Hartland) was 4th at 197 lbs. The Muskegon Community College will next compete at the Olivet Duals on November 23rd.   Full tournament brackets can be viewed by visiting www.trackwrestling.com and searching Trine.
