What’s Changing for the 2017-18 FAFSA?

ALERT!  The Department of Education and the IRS announced in a joint statement that the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) is currently suspended for the next several weeks. What does this means for you?  If you have not completed your FAFSA, don’t wait for the DRT to be restored.  You can manually enter your 2015 tax information from your tax returns.  Failing to complete your FAFSA may mean losing access to federal, state and institutional financial aid and missing deadlines.

The process for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is changing for the 2017-18 academic year.  In the past, you needed to wait until January 1st to file a FAFSA.

New this year, you will be able to complete your 2017-18 FAFSA starting October 1, 2016.  The Department of Education has coined the term “Early FAFSA” for this change.  For more information, visit the following link on Early FAFSA.

Also new, the income reported on the FAFSA will be from two years prior to the application year (referred to as “Prior-Prior Year”), rather than only one year prior to the application year.  This change will make the FAFSA easier because you will have your completed income tax information available at the time of application.  For more, visit Prior-Prior Year on the Web.

Using this “prior-prior year” information increases the likelihood that you (and your parents, if dependent) will be able to import income information directly from the IRS using the online Data Retrieval Tool (DRT).  This will reduce documentation requirements and administrative burdens for both you and the school.  MCC is excited by these changes anticipating it will be a great help in your process of planning for and applying to college.

Remember to release your information to Muskegon Community College, college code #002297.  After submission, MCC will receive an electronic Institutional Student Information Report (ISIR).  A valid ISIR is a requirement for all aid programs based on financial need.
