Dance Theater Concert in Overbrook

The Muskegon Community College Creative and Performing Arts Department is proud to present Overbrook Dance Theater in Concert – XXVI with performances on March 30 and 31 at 7:30pm, and April 1 at 3pm in the Overbrook Theater.

The college’s biennial spring dance concert features faculty works by Sarah Powell and Cathy Gamby-Weideman, in addition to guest artists’ work by Beth LaBaren-Root, Director of Dance at Southwestern Michigan College. Several select student and alumnus choreography will also be showcased.

Sarah Powell, the director of this year’s concert, will present two pieces. She has had the privilege of launching MCC’s Muskegon Dance Company in January of 2012. The 14-member company is thrilled to kick off their premiere performance at home. This group of diverse movers will present contemporary works that explore elements of non-traditional partnering, improvisation, and innovative movement concepts.

The concert offers authentic African movement along with live drumming, as well as contemporary jazz, hip-hop, lyrical and acrobatics throughout the performance. The variety of content this concert provides promises something for everyone and gives audiences exposure to many dance forms.

Student-choreographed works for the concert created by: Alivia Rutkowski, Ina Terwilliger, Michelle Thompson and Corey Christofferson. Alumnus choreographers, continuing to give back to the MCC community, include: Erin Blais, Jodi Ellinger, Rhashika Jefferson-Lewis, and Mike McCullum. The performance is truly a community-wide event, with dancers ranging from high school to adult, spanning across the Muskegon community.

General admission tickets are $5 for MCC students and $10 for the public. For more information or reservations, call (231) 777-0324 or visit the MCC Campus, Room 166.
