The MCC Overbrook Art Gallery will feature the color photography of Diane Zoellmer and the mixed media sculptures of Cara O’Brien in an exhibit titled “In Between Here and Gone: Works by Cara O’Brien and Diane Zoellmer” from Nov. 6 through Dec. 14.

Free and open to the public, Overbrook Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday-Friday with special weekend and evening hours during performances and concerts in the adjacent Overbrook Theater. A free public artists’ reception will be held Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. with a gallery talk by the artists at 4 p.m. Call (231)777-0324 for more information.

Both artists’ separate but similar visual exploration and artistic interpretation of natural phenomena act as the meeting point of their work.

Currently using the shores of Lake Michigan as her inspiration and location for making color photographs, Zoellmer’s work reveals transient moments in the building up and erosion of ice, snow and frozen sand. Her photographs are a visual documentary of the found sculpture and textures the forces of nature create on a daily basis.

O’Brien utilizes these same found textures and forms in nature as the jumping off point for her biomorphic mixed media sculptures. Using driftwood, reclaimed weathered lumber or rusted metal in combination with hand-formed porcelain components, O’Brien transforms inanimate materials into works that suggest life within. Her carefully constructed sculptures draw attention to the beauty found in the process of decay.

Zoellmer received both her Masters of Education and Bachelor of Science degrees from Grand Valley State University (GVSU). She is currently an Independent Technology Consultant with previous experience in educational technology in the Muskegon Area, Ottawa, and Oceana Intermediate School Districts, as well as in GVSU’s Education Department. She was also a K-12 teacher in Reeths-Puffer Schools for 23 years. Her photographs have appeared in juried competitive shows at the Holland Area Arts Council and the Muskegon Museum of Art.

O’Brien, who holds a BFA degree from Central Michigan University, has exhibited widely in Michigan, including Artprize, juried competitive shows at the Holland Area Arts Council, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids, and the Muskegon Museum of Art. She has exhibited at invitational shows at Lafontsee Galleries of Douglas and Grand Rapids. O’Brien has also produced numerous public art commissions over the past 15 years at sites, including Harbor Hospice, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, the city of Fremont, Grant Area District Library, Fremont Area District Library, as well as several West Michigan Schools.
