MCC Library to Participate in Statewide Organ Donor Registry Program

October 11 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

MCC’s Hendrik Meijer Library/Information Technology Center is one of more than 150 libraries statewide that will participate in the 8th Annual Michigan Libraries for Life. The nationally acclaimed campaign inspires individuals to join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry while educating them on the facts of organ, tissue and eye donation.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 10 and 11, and on Monday, Oct. 16, an informational table will be located in the hallway outside the MCC Bookstore from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. MCC Adjunct Reference Librarian Lisa Anderson will be on hand to sign up people for the Registry, answer questions, and distribute giveaways.

Michigan Libraries for Life began in 2010 at the University of Michigan Taubman Health Sciences Library and has expanded to include academic, hospital, and public libraries. Each library determines its own donor drive schedule within the designated week and arranges for volunteers to staff an information table.

In 2015, the partnership, led by the Taubman Health Sciences Library and Gift of Life Michigan, was recognized by Donate Life America in 2015 as the top organ, tissue and eye donation promotional activity in the country. This year, the program received a $13,000 grant from the Gift of Life Foundation to reach an even greater number of Michigan residents.

Since its inception, Michigan Libraries for Life has inspired 3,500 people to become organ, tissue and eye donors. Additional information and a state map showing all the participating libraries are available at www.librariesforlife.org. Michigan residents who join the state’s Donor Registry will receive a red heart donor symbol for the front of their driver’s license or state ID card. Non-residents can also join the Donor Registry.
