10/8/2016 @ 6:45 am - 10:30 pm

On Saturday, October 8, the Western Civilization Courses (HIST 101) will travel along with community members to two select historical institutions in Chicago. The first institution is the Oriental Institute, the premier museum with artifacts from the Mesopotamian cultures and a prime training ground for students in archaeology and museum studies, The Oriental Institute was the backdrop for two Harrison Ford film role in the Indiana Jones films – “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”The second stop is the Museum of Science and Industry, a world class institution catering to science and technology. Founded as part of the Columbia Exposition in 1892, the museum remains an icon on the Chicago lakefront. Featuring state-of-the-art exhibits on space travel, genetics, transportation, agriculture and other elements, the museum is world renowned  and home to a U 505 German submarine and a replica of a working coal mine.

The trip concludes with dinner (on your own) in Chicago’s Chinatown district. Chinatown is like walking down the streets of Beijing. Surrounded by Chinese shops, restaurants and other cultural artifacts, you will be hard pressed to remember you’re in Chicago.  Sample from Chinese cuisine at one of many restaurants in the area.  Not interested in Chinese food? There are other restaurants, including three famous Chicago pizzerias, nearby which serve a wonderful Chicago deep dish pizza.

So plan on spending the complete day in an educational and cultural immersion in Chicago.  Act now! Space is limited!
