‘Water: Paintings by Sheryl Budnik and Mary Sundstrom’

From a placid, introspective pool to a roaring, ship-wrecking beast, water is the subject of paintings by Michigan artists Sheryl Budnik and Mary Sundstrom on exhibit in Muskegon Community College’s Overbrook Gallery from Sept. 25 through Oct. 26, 2017.

The gallery, located on the MCC main campus at 221 S. Quarterline Road, is free and open to the public. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, with special weekend and evening hours during performances in the adjacent Overbrook Theater. A free public reception will be held on Thursday, Oct. 12, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Overbrook Gallery with a gallery talk by the artists at 4:30 p.m.

During October, the subject of water is being explored throughout the Muskegon area as various cultural organizations participate in AhFest, the annual Arts and Humanities Festival.

Budnik and Sundstrom in their works present a range of symbolic associations as varied as the multiple physical forms that water can take, e.g. ice, liquid, and vapor.

Represented by Richard App Gallery in Grand Rapids, MI, Budnik has had solo shows at Cornelia Street Jazz Café/Gallery in New York City, Romany Kramoris Gallery in Sag Harbor, NY, and numerous galleries throughout Michigan including the Rankin Gallery at Ferris State University and the NCCA Artsplace in Fremont.

Her work is in several public collections, including the West Michigan Symphony in Muskegon, Holland (MI) Hospitals, St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, University of Wisconsin- Madison, and the Tweed Museum of the University of Minnesota in Duluth. Since 2011, Budnik’s work has also appeared annually in ArtPrize at Fifth Third Bank in Cathedral Square, DeVos Place.

Sundstrom has participated in group exhibitions throughout west Michigan, including ArtPrize at the City Water Building, the West Michigan Area Show at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Bay College Bessie Center in Escanba, MI, and the Muskegon Museum of Art’s Regional Competition.

In 2016, she had two solo exhibitions at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center in Bryon Center, MI, and at the NCCA Artsplace in Fremont, MI  She is an active workshop instructor in a variety of media for adults and children.  In addition, she is the program director and exhibitions co-director of the Holland Area Arts Council.  She received her BFA degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a minor in art history and has taken graduate-level art courses at GVSU and WMU.
