The First Annual Muskegon Community College Welding Invitational for tech center students who reside in local counties will be held at MCC’s Sturrus Technology Center Welding Lab/Classroom in downtown Muskegon on Friday May 11.

Students from Muskegon Tech Center and the Newaygo County Tech Center will be competing for a MCC scholarship and welding gear.

“The competition will provide an opportunity for tech center students to compete in our new state-of-the art welding facility, “said Tom Sumerix, MCC welding instructor and coordinator of the Welding Invitational. “They get to show off their welding skills and have fun doing it. The invitational involves a written exam testing their knowledge and a performance test using the shielded metal arc welding process.”

The students’ work will be judged by a committee of professionals working in welding-related fields. Students will tour the MCC applied technology facilities, eat lunch, and attend the afternoon awards ceremony.

The contest is sponsored by MCC, Purity Gas and Welding Supply, Lincoln Electric and Miller Electric. For more information, contact Tom Sumerix at (231) 777-0358 or tom.sumerix@muskegoncc.edu
