Muskegon Community College was singled out nationally by Performance Racing Industry magazine, the voice of the racing marketplace, in its June 2016 cover story on “Electric & Hybrid Racing.”
The article explained how a growing segment of motorsports, from drag racing to road racing, is now catering to EV (electric vehicle) technology. The National Electric Drag Racing Association (NEDRA), whose charter emphasizes EV education, offers many divisions that have attracted “early-stage engineering students.”
“One such hotbed is Muskegon Community College (MCC) in Muskegon, Michigan, which has built EV dragsters for competition under the NEDRA banner since 2011,” noted the article’s author, Rick Carlton. “The student engineers at MCC produced a 1/4-mile world-record for electric dragsters at 109 mph (12.369) in 2013, and upped the ante by taking another record at 110 mph (11.7421) in 2015. Subsequently, the college’s Automotive Technology Program (ATP) and MCC Motorsports Club have continued to evolve faster and faster EV variants. ‘We’ve earned some real bragging rights,’ said ATP instructor Al Thomas.”
