MCC’s popular one-credit, mini-art history course, “The Art and History of the Celts,” returns this year between Sept. 6-20 and includes a required experiential learning excursion to the 2017 Michigan Irish Music Festival in Muskegon on Sept. 15-17.

The course will also be offered as a non-credit community lecture series in partnership with the Muskegon Irish Music Festival.

“How many music festivals can you attend and earn college credit?” asked MCC Art Instructor Tim Norris, who teaches the course along with guest presenters Michael Johnson and Peggy Hennelly-Maniates. “More of us have more Celtic blood than we might realize. Find out the surprising locations in the world the ancient Celts occupied.”

The course/lecture series will meet immediately before, during, and after the Michigan Irish Music Festival. The lectures will take place in the Overbrook Theater on the MCC campus.

The lecture dates and topics are:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 6: The Rise of the Celts and the Birth of Their Art
  • Monday, Sept. 11: What Makes Celtic Music and Art “Celtic?” and How the Irish Saved Civilization
  • Wednesday, Sept. 13: The Book of Kells and Celtic Mythology
  • Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17: Michigan Irish Music Festival
  • Wednesday, Sept. 20: Celti-Pop: Celtic Culture meets Popular Culture

The non-credit lecture series is free. Reduced admission rates to the Michigan Irish Festival for lecture series participants. Call the MCC Arts and Humanities Office at (231) 777-0324 to register.
