MCC, MMA and Irish Festival Offer Celtic Art and History Lectures in September

A new MCC art one-credit course, “The Art and History of the Celts,” which runs from Sept.7-21, includes a required experiential learning excursion to the 2016 Michigan Irish Music Festival in Muskegon on Sept. 17-18. The course will also be offered as a non-credit community lecture series in partnership with the Muskegon Museum of Art (MMA) and the Michigan Irish Music Festival.

Presented by MCC art instructor Tim Norris and guest experts Michael Johnson, Peggy Hennelly-Maniates, and Larry Halverson, the course/lecture series will meet immediately before, during, and after the Michigan Irish Music Festival. The lectures will take place at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 W. Webster Ave.

The lecture dates and topics are:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 7: The Rise of the Celts and the Birth of Their Art
  • Monday, Sept. 12: How the Irish Saved Civilization
  • Wednesday, Sept. 14: What Makes Celtic Music and Art “Celtic?”
  • Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18: Michigan Irish Music Festival
  • Wednesday, Sept. 21: Celti-Pop: Celtic Culture meets Popular Culture

The cost for the one-credit course beyond tuition includes a lab fee, text book, and a reduced daily admission to one-to-two days of the Michigan Irish Music Festival.

The cost for the non-credit lecture series is $45 per person for non-MMA members and $40 for MMA members. Both qualify for reduced admission rates to the Michigan Irish Festival.
