MCC to Celebrate Earth Week with Series of Events

Earth Day 2016

Muskegon Community College will celebrate Earth Week 2016 with a series of free events April 18-22.

Throughout Earth Week, the MCC Sustainability Council will be hosting informational sessions on both composting and recycling during lunchtime in the Student Union. Meanwhile, visitors to the college’s Hendrik Meijer Library in April and May can explore exhibits and books on a variety of environmental topics, such as climate change, local foods and water issues.

On Tuesday, April 19, MCC Biology Instructor and naturalist Theresa VanVeelen will lead a lunchtime flower walk on the Kasey Hartz Natural Area trail on campus. Those interested should meet at noon in the Stevenson Center lobby.

MCC will mark Earth Day, Friday, April 22, with its annual clean-up between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Volunteers should be at the Library entrance at 11 a.m. to receive safety vests, bags, maps and instructions. MCC’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society chapter is coordinating the clean-up of MCC’s Adopt-a-Highway section along Business 31.

Native Planting on May 19

In May, the college is planning a native planting near the Science Center on Thursday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers should meet at 10 a.m. in the Science Center hallway outside Room 1122. Following the event, tree seedlings will be given away at noon in the Stevenson Center lobby.
