The MCC Motorsports Club’s electric dragster “Short Circuit” set a world record at the US131 Motorsports Park in Martin, MI on Sept. 9.

The vehicle covered the quarter-mile track with two record passes. Short Circuit finished in 11.7557 seconds @ 112.37 mph at 8:37 p.m. and 38 minutes later in 11.7421 seconds @ 110.57 mph. The latter will be the record because both passes were within the required 1% of each other, explained Al Thomas, the MCC automotive coordinator, club advisor and team manager.

“Our driver, Jeff Montella, did a superb job piloting the vehicle,” said Thomas. Montella is an adjunct faculty member of the automotive program at Muskegon Community College.

Assisting were: Crew Chief Kyle Spoelman, Chassis Specialist Thomas Clock, and crew members Daniel Bailey, Darrin Musk, Ryan Lubbers, Jacob Schroeder, Dave McLeod, along with Technical Specialist Darin Gilbert and Team Photographer Marylou Koch-Bergren.

The activities of the Motorsports Club are instrumental for the MCC automotive program, added Thomas.

“Reaching the right demographics of the community through vehicle displays and racing our cars effectively markets the MCC automotive department,” he said.” The students love building, showing and racing their creations”.

Thomas, who is also the National Electric Drag Racing Associations Midwest Regional Director, will submit the necessary paperwork to record the world record.

“Short Circuit” was one of five electric vehicles, including an entry from University of Michigan named “Chronos,” racing that evening at the US131 Motorsports track.
