Muskegon Community College is hosting “Achieving the Dream STEM Awareness and Exploration” for high school and middle school students in Muskegon and Ottawa counties on Friday, March 1, at the Sturrus Technology Center, 388 W. Clay Avenue, in downtown Muskegon.

MCC applied technology faculty and representatives from 10-15 area companies will be on hand to explain the variety of careers available, demonstrate the state-of-the-art equipment used to teach and train students, and discuss the future of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and manufacturing in the area. Meanwhile, representatives from West Michigan Works!, the Muskegon Area Career Tech Center, and the Early College programs at MCC will be on site to discuss classroom to career pathways.

Students will also tour the Sturrus Technology Center – home to MCC’s programs in electronics, welding, machining, automation, CAD/CNC, foundry and engineering, as well as entrepreneurial studies and experiential learning. They will explore the Fab Lab and create items on laser cutters, 3-D printers, and with electricity kits. Prizes and giveaways will be awarded.

Participating students will have two sessions from which to choose. The first session takes place from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the second session runs from noon to 3:30 p.m.

Support for this program is being provided for by Achieving the Dream, through a “Community College Advanced Manufacturing Career Pathways” grant from the Arconic Foundation.
