VP John Selmon Receives Love in Action Award

John SelmonDr. John Selmon, vice president of student services at Muskegon Community College, received a Love in Action Award from the Urban League of Greater Muskegon during ceremonies on Feb. 23 at MCC.

Selmon was one of 15 honorees at the 13th Annual Love in Action Dinner. They were recognized for being exemplary role models and mentors, for demonstrating community involvement, and for being strong advocates for the African American community.

“Dr. John Selmon is a longtime leader of students and a leader in his community,” said MCC President Dr. Dale K. Nesbary. “His professional career of nearly 30 years demonstrates a strong and abiding commitment to supporting his colleagues, the African American community and the residents of the state of Michigan.”

Prior to joining MCC last May, Dr. Selmon was executive director of student services at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, Mich. His professional career includes serving as a group vice president at Davenport University.

The Ohio native earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he was an All-American and two-time conference MVP wrestler. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Eastern Michigan University.

In addition to Dr. Selmon, the other 2012 Love in Action Award recipients were: Chandar Ricks, Don Studaven, Vernon Nash, Jr., Joseph Warren, Bill Gill, William B. Anthony, Morning Snow Bear, Roosevelt Hines, Doris Rucks, Rev. Jerry Pearson, Debra Oliver, Mildred Stevenson, Marge Burman, and Dollie Hippchen.
