Head Coach - Rick Rykse

Rick Rykse begins his 3rd  season as the head coach at Muskegon Community College and 4th season overall as part of  the Jayhawks Volleyball Program. This past season the Jayhawks finished runner up in conference play with a record of 11-3 and an overall record of 24-19.  During the 2011 season the Jayhawks were Conference Champions, finished 3rd in the MCCAA State Championship and finished runner-up in the Regional 12 Championship while compiling an overall record of 32-12. Over the past 2 seasons there have been 4 Jayhawks selected as first team All-Conference, All-State and All-Region plus an additional 3 players being selected to various all conference teams.

Prior to coming to Muskegon Community College Rick was the Head Coach at Davenport University from 2006-2009 where he started the volleyball program in 2006. During his time at Davenport Rick had 9 players receive all-conference awards and in 2009 he also started a JV program.

From 2001-2005, Rick was the head coach at Ravenna High School. During his time at Ravenna the Bulldogs captured 4 district titles, 3 regional titles, 3 Final 4 appearances including two State runners-up finishes in Class C.  Coach Rykse also received the award as Muskegon Chronicle All Area Coach of the Year on two occasions. Over the 4 seasons at Ravenna Rick had 8 players receive MHSAA All State honors.

Rick owns and operates Inside Out Volleyball in Muskegon where he serves as President and General Manager. He is also the club director of the Inside Out Juniors program and serves as the Master coach overseeing the instruction of all of the club teams.  Rick is also the Tour Director of the Midwest Professional Volleyball Association. The MPVA is a West Michigan based beach volleyball tour that attracts pro and amateur players from throughout the Midwest.

Rick has been married to Amy Rykse for the past 26 years and they have three boys; Adam, who will be a graduate assistant coach at Valparaiso University this Fall,  Zach, a sophomore at Michigan State University and Alex who will be a freshman at Moodie Bible Institute in Chicago. Their family resides in Muskegon.

Assistant Coach - Lindsey Balcom

Lindsey will begin her initial season as the 1st assistant on the Jayhawks staff after serving as a positional coach in 2012.

Lindsey returns to MCC after having played on the 2002 and 2003 Jayhawk teams. The 2002 team was the most successful team in Jayhawks history with a 39-5 record and a 5th place finish at Nationals. Lindsey then went on to finish her playing career at Aquinas College.

In 2006 Lindsey graduated from Aquinas College with a degree in Sports Management and Business administration. Over her coaching career Lindsey has served as the Freshman and J.V. coach at Ravenna High school and has been Coach Rykse’ assistant coach for a total of 8 seasons including 4 seasons at Davenport University from 2006-2209.

Lindsey and her husband Shane reside in Conklin with their 2 children Kaylee age 7 and Sawyer age 2. Both Lindsey and Shane are avid beach volleyball players. Shane also is the Varsity Volleyball Coach at Coopersville High School.

Assistant Coach - Ashley Hulbert

Ashley will return to MCC as an assistant coach on the Jayhawk Volleyball staff after completing 3 years of playing college volleyball, first for two years at MCC and then this past year at Madonna University.

While at MCC Ashley was selected as 1st Team All-Conference, All-State , and All-Region in her sophomore season.  She also owns most of the Jayhawk hitting records including most kills in a match, a season, and a career. Over the two years that Ashley played at MCC the team had an overall record of 56-31 and won a conference championship in 2011.

Ashley is currently pursuing her nursing degree at MCC while also spending time coaching club volleyball and playing beach volleyball. Ashley is a 2010 graduate of Fruitport High School.
