CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Students will study and practice designing with photographs utilizing digital photography and image editing software. Students will create product, portrait and landscape digital imagery, manipulate them in image editing software, and finally utilize in print graphic design projects. Emphasis will be placed on creating images and manipulating them in Photoshop CS2 to achieve desired results for print design.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Students will create digital photographs along the visual spectrum from informative to emotional and determine appropriate use in different design disciplines.

Students will utilize Photoshop CS2 and their digital imagery (or downloaded imagery made available by the author at http://www.scottkelbybooks.com/cs2digitalphotographers/) to resize, color correct, and create b/w imagery.

Students will become familiar with digital cameras on the market and different options available with different models.

Students will utilize Photoshop CS2 to fix lighting and image problems in their digital images.

Students will learn to remove unwanted objects in digital imagery including portrait retouching, red-eye removal, and landscape background removal.

Students will demonstrate dramatic special effects in their imagery by creating blurs, soft focus, and replicating traditional photographic filters.

Students will create a portfolio presentation to show clients and add copyright information to their own, original images.
ASSESSMENT: Students will complete an in-class exercise for each new concept demonstrating their level of skill. A graded homework assignment will follow, reinforcing the new concept.
TEACHING METHODS: Lectures, handouts, class discussions, demonstrations, and practice in-class exercises will accompany each concept introduced. Group activities will be employed at the concepting and creative idea formulation sections.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: The student is expected to be at all class meetings. In the event of an absence, all work missed is the responsibility of the student. The student will be allowed three (3) absences during a 15 week semester and one (1) absence during a 7 1/2 week term. Grades will be lowered one full letter grade with each additional absence. No excused absences will be allowed except for a summons to jury duty, in which case a note from the court clerk will serve as the student’s excuse. Students whose lack of attendance impedes the learning process will be withdrawn from the class.
