Welcome to Microbiology. Orientation and important course information are detailed below.
Tuesday, August 26: All online microbiology lecture students will be sent an email containing the course syllabus as well as instructions for starting the course. I will be using your MCC email address (check your account weekly). If you register after this date, email the instructor for you start-up information.
Tuesday, September 2: This is the first day of class. The microbiology Blackboard classroom will be made available at 8:00 a.m. on this day. Week one assignments will be made available on this day. You should plan on weekly assignments for this course.
Wednesday, September 3: An optional orientation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 4:55 p.m. in MCC room 247. Students who are taking an online course for the first time or who would like to meet their instructor and classmates should plan to attend. You may also set up an optional personal appointment, by email, to go over class material.
Monday, December 8 through Thursday, December 11: Students will need to present their pathogen portfolio to the instructor. Appointments will be made prior to this week.
Monday, December 15: Students should note that they will need to come to campus on this date for the final course exam. Students should also note that they will need to come to campus to take four additional exams. The course exam schedule will be posted the first week of class in your Blackboard classroom. An appointment will need to be made by each student for a specific testing time (MCC Testing Center) on the dates assigned
Prior to the start date of your course, please make sure you are ready by completing the following:
1) Course Technology Requirements (MCC student technology support line: 1-866-718-5170)
a) Access to the Blackboard classroom.
b) Operating system: Microsoft Windows or Macintosh OS.
c) Web browser: Internet Explorer or FireFox.
d) High speed internet access.
e) Microsoft Word (or compatible).
f) Microsoft PowerPoint or PowerPoint Viewer.
g) Other plug-ins (free plug-ins: www.fcc.gov/plug-ins.html ): Flash Player, Java, RealPlayer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader.
h) Back-up technology access in the event yours fails (deadlines must be met).
2) Purchase Required Lecture Course Material*
a) Pommerville, Jeffrey C., Alcamo’s Fundamentals of Microbiology, 8th Ed., ISBN 13: 9780763737627 or ISBN 10: 0763737623 (MCC bookstore or other site).
b) Howell: Lecture Supplement, fall 2008 (MCC bookstore).
c) ParSCORETM Score Sheets - approximately 8 (MCC bookstore).
d) Binder, colored pencils, and miscellaneous material (to be announced).
* Additional requirements will be needed for the laboratory course. The microbiology laboratory course is required for students taking the lecture course (an exception will be made for those students who have already successfully completed the laboratory course and are repeating the lecture course).
