Mary Tyler

Mary Tyler teaches the Literature of William Shakespeare, Creative Writing, Poetry Writing, Introduciton to Poetry, and English 102. She is also the chairperson for the Muskegon Writers' Center. Mary earned a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Michigan, a Master's in English from Western Michigan University, and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Creative Writing from Western Michigan University. She has been teaching at MCC since 1991.
Mary still says this of her job as a college English instructor: "If I won the lottery tomorrow, I would continue to teach writing and literature to college students. Teaching is still the most important profession I can imagine, and sharing great literature with fellow human beings is still a wonderful way to make our lives full-bodied and rich."
Of her teaching style, Mary says, "It is impossible to teach a rock; therefore, my students are far more important in my classroom than I am. If I cannot reach my students, if I cannot find a way into their thinking and touch them so that they are receptive to new ideas, it will never matter how much I know. If I cannot make contact with actual human beings, then my work in the classroom will amount to nothing more than me lecturing in front of a pile of rocks, and I can't imagine that kind of teaching as ever being much fun."
Mary lives in North Muskegon with her husband, their three children, and two beautiful collies named Shakespeare and Charlie.
