Reflections
on the
Paradox of Affluence
A Muskegon Community College Arts Showcase
What is “The Paradox of Affluence” and its purpose here at MCC?
Paradox is defined as “one (as a person, situation, or action) having seemingly contradictory qualities or phases.” Affluence is defined in three ways: an abundant flow or supply, profusion; abundance of property, wealth; and a flowing to or towards a point, influx. By putting these two words together, we can look at the contradictory elements of abundance and wealth in the world that surrounds us.
The purpose of the “Reflections” showcase is to challenge the MCC community to look at their surroundings and see how wealth and abundance affect them, either positively or negatively, and then reflect their findings in any of the three areas of the fine arts.
What are the 3 areas of fine arts?

All week long a Penny War will take place for patrons to cast their votes for the artwork on display using their pennies. All pennies raised will be donated to Habitat for Humanity to help provide homes for those in need. The penny war totals will be gathered and special awards given to the winners at the Recognitions Ceremony at 4:00 p.m. in the Overbrook Theater on Friday, October 30.
