This is an alphabetical listing of all databases including journals, magazines, newspapers, digital books and other materials.   We also have a separate listing of digital books for off campus access.   Use your MCC network login (firstname.lastname) for access to the databases on this page.

ABC-CLIO Digital Books Includes books pertaining to the social sciences and humanities. 

ABC-CLIO Social Sciences databases Includes materials from the social sciences including American History, Social Issues, World Geography, and World History.  Also contains the History Reference Online E-Books.

America's Newspapers (formerly Newsbank) is a good source for local, state and national information.  Contains several regional newspapers including The Muskegon Chronicle, the White Lake Beacon, the Grand Rapids Press, and Detroit News as well as many major newspapers including The New York Times and The Washington Post.  

ARTstor This database is comprised of "a digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences with a set of tools to view, present, and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes." The images may be used for educational purposes.

Cambridge Histories Online  A digital book collection of some of the most scholarly books pertaining to historical studies.  An extensive collection covering many different aspects of history including economic, literary, musical, religious and political. 

CQ Electronic Library  Contains three databases: 

  • The CQ Researcher Online which reports on controversial topics. Each report covers the history, current situation and contains bibliography of additional sources. 
  • CQ Weekly which contains information on U.S. Congress; includes status of bills, votes and amendments, floor and committee activity. 
  • Historic Documents Series Online Edition which includes primary sources covering current events around the world from 1972 to present. 

DIGITAL BOOK DATABASES:

  • ABC-CLIO Digital Books Includes books pertaining to the social sciences and humanities. 
  • Cambridge Histories Online  A digital book collection of some of the most scholarly books pertaining to historical studies.  An extensive collection covering many different aspects of history including economic, literary, musical, religious and political. 
  • Ebrary Academic Complete contains over 85,000 ebooks covering all academic subjects.  The ebooks are from scholarly and university publishers.  Includes classics as well as current research and literature.  Users may download ebooks onto multiple devices. 
  • ebooks (formerly netLibrary) is a digital book database. Over 21,000 scholarly and general works.
  • Greenwood Digital Collection currently includes books from the social sciences.
  • History E-books contains over 2,000 full text, scholarly history books dealing with ancient through 20th century time periods. Coverage of the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.
  • Oxford Reference Online contains 100 dictionaries and reference books and an encyclopedia. Areas covered include the humanities, social sciences, literature, politics, business, law, science and medicine.
  • Safari Tech Books Online contains over 1,000 full text books covering computer-related topics including certification, graphics, hardware, Internet, IT management, markup languages, networking, operating systems, programming, security, software engineering and other topics. Browse by subject category or search by author, title, publisher or ISBN.
  • Science Direct College Edition contains the full text of major social science encyclopedias with emphasis on the behavioral sciences.  Titles include the encyclopedias of:   Applied Psychology, the Human Brain, Information Systems, International Media and Communications, Language & Linguistics, Psychotherapy, Social Measurement and the International Encyclopedia of Social & Behavioral Sciences,  Also contains scholarly journals from the social sciences.

EBSCOhost Contains these databases: 

  • CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) provides indexing for nearly 3,000 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. 
  • CINAHL Plus with Full Text provides full text for over 750 journals indexed in CINAHL.
  • Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition database provides nearly 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. It also features the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, which covers 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names.
  • OMNIFile Fulltext contains magazines and journals from a variety of subject areas including business, technology, art, education, biology and law.  
  • Magill On Literature Plus is a literary database, combining MagillOnLiterature and MagillOnAuthors. This database includes all the literary works, reviewed critical analyses and brief plot summaries that are included in MagillOnLiterature, as well as all the biographies and author essays included in MagillOnAuthors.  
  • Columbia Granger's Poetry contains works of poetry found in anthologies, and volumes of collected works and selected works for individual poets. This database currently has more than 175,300 poems in full text and more than 500,000 poem citations.
  • Ebooks (formerly netLibrary) a collection of over 21,000 digital books.
  • NoveList is a guide to fiction and may be searched by age level, topics, authors and series.


Encyclopedia Britannica Online Academic Edition is an authoritative and comprehensive encyclopedia.

  • Article First is and index to magazines and journals with some full text.  
  • EBooks is an index to electronic books found in libraries worldwide
  • ECO is an index to scholarly journals. 
  • ERIC is an index to journals and reports pertaining to education.
  • GPO is an index to government publications.
  • HandPressBook is a catalog of European printing from the 15th century to the 1930s. 
  • History of Science, Technology & Medicine is an international bibliography of sources.
  • MEDLINE is an index to medical, dental and nursing literature.
  • OAIster is a worldwide catalog of digital resources.
  • SCIPIO is a database of art and rare book sales catalogs. 
  • World Almanac database contains Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia and almanacs. 
  • WorldCat database is an index to materials in libraries worldwide.
  • WorldCat Dissertations database is an index to the theses and dissertations found in WorldCat. 


GaleNet Databases contains these databases:

 

  • Biography and Genealogy Master Index enables users to locate biographical entries contained in more than 1,000 volumes and editions of important current and retrospective biographical reference sources. This index contains citations that point to over 15 million biographies on nearly 5 million people, living and deceased, from all time periods, geographical locations, and fields of endeavor.
  • Literature Resource Center contains biographical information, overviews, full-text literary criticism and reviews on more than 130,000 writers in all disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world. The optional MLA International Bibliography module adds citations for hundreds of thousands of books, articles and dissertations from 1926 to the present, linked to full text where available. 
  • Book Review Index Online is an index to book reviews with over five million review citations from thousands of publications. 
  • LitFinder contains information on world literature and authors throughout history.  LitFinder contains a wealth of literary works including over 150,000 full-text poems and 800,000+ poetry citations, as well as short stories, speeches, and plays. For students or patrons seeking a deeper view into literature, LitFinder also includes secondary materials like biographies and images.
  • Something About the Author Online includes all volumes ever printed in this series which examines the lives and works of authors and illustrators for children and young adults.  Something About the Author Online includes both the main series and Something About the Author Autobiography Series, totaling more than 217 volumes, 12,000 entries, and nearly 17,000 images.  
  • GREENR (Global Reference on the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources)  This databases "focuses on the physical, social, and economic aspects of environmental issues. Topic, organization, and country portals form research centers around issues covering energy systems, health care, agriculture, climate change, population, and economic development. Portals include authoritative analysis, academic journals, news, case studies, legislation, conference proceedings, primary source documents, statistics, and rich multimedia."

Humanities Ebooks contains over 2,000 full text, scholarly history books dealing with ancient through 20th century time periods. Coverage of the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.

InfoTrac  contains several general and subject specific databases.  The most used databases in this collection are:

  • Academic OneFile isa good source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources. With extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects, Academic OneFile is both authoritative and comprehensive. Coverage from 1980 to present.
  • General Reference Center Gold  is a general interest database that integrates a variety of sources - newspapers, reference books, magazines, and trade publications. Find articles on many topics including current events, popular culture, business and industry trends, the arts and sciences, and sports.
  • Expanded Academic ASAP contains articles from many disciplines.  Sources are scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers.
  • General OneFile A source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics.
  • Health Reference Center Academic provides access to the full text of nursing and allied health journals, plus the wide variety of personal health information sources.  The material contained in this database is intended for informational purposes only.
  • General Business File ASAP includes company performance and activity, industry events and trends as well as the latest in management, economics and politics. Access to a combination of broker research reports, trade publications, newspapers, journals and company directory listings with full text and images available.  
  • LegalTrac an index to over 1,400 titles including major law reviews, legal newspapers, bar association journals and international legal journals. It also contains law-related articles from over 1,000 additional business and general interest titles.
  • Computer Database contains computer-related product introductions, news and reviews in areas such as hardware, software, electronics, engineering, communications and the application of technology.
  • New York Times full text from 1995 to present.
  • InfoTrac Custom Newspapers contains full text newspapers from the U.S. and the World.
  • Informe esta una colección de revistas hispánicas con textos completos. Abarca negocios, salud, tecnología, cultura, temas de actualidad y otras materias.
  • Business and Company ASAP contains information on companies, markets and industries, trends, mergers, acquisitions,  current management theory and company overviews.  Includes business and trade journals, newspapers and company directory profiles.
  • Opposing Viewpoints in Context contains viewpoint articles, topic overviews, full text magazine, academic journal and newspaper articles, primary source documents, statistics, images and podcasts, and link to Websites.

JSTOR (Journal Storage Archive) includes databases which contain articles from scholarly journals. Included are Arts & Sciences I, II, III and IV and the Biological Sciences collection. JSTOR serves as an archive for journals, consequently current years are not included. The scholarly journal articles cover a range of disciplines including: social sciences, ecology & evolutionary biology, education, business, language & literature, mathematics and philosophy.

Lexis-Nexis contains journals, magazines, newspapers and documents pertaining to business, legal and medical topics and current news. The legal portion contains case law, codes and regulations, and patent information.

New York Times 1851-  contains the full text of the New York Times newspaper from 1851 to current.

Newsbank Newsfile is a newspaper database which includes the Muskegon Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, The Detroit Free Press, Detroit News, Grand Rapids Press, Lansing State Journal and The Washington Post. 

Opposing Viewpoints in Context contains viewpoint articles, topic overviews, full text magazine, academic journal, and newspaper articles, primary source documents, statistics, images and podcasts, and links to Websites.

Oxford American National Biography contains biographical information on more than 18,000 people from all eras who have influenced and shaped American history and culture.

Oxford English Dictionary is the authority on the history and development of the English language since 1150. The online version is an update to the 20 volume, 2nd edition.

Oxford Reference Online contains 100 dictionaries and reference books and an encyclopedia. Areas covered include the humanities, social sciences, literature, politics, business, law, science and medicine.

PsycArticles Full text articles from journals in the field of psychology provided by the American Psychological Association. 

PsychiatryOnline contains psychiatric journals, the DSM-5® and earlier editions of the DSM, handbooks, and comprehensive textbooks in the field of psychiatry. 

ProQuest Newspapers includes the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, Seattle Post, The Boston Globe, and the Washington Post.

ProQuest Psychology Journals includes hundreds of psychology journals.

  • Art Museum Image Gallery contains digital art images and related multimedia gathered from distinguised museum collections around the world.  Time period is from ancient to contemporary.  
  • Biography Reference Bank contains information on over 500,000 people from ancient through present.   
  • Book Review Digest Plus contains book reviews from 1983 to present. Includes fiction and non-fiction.  The database includes children’s books as well as books for adults and young adults. 
  • Children's Core Collection is used to select children's books and includes fiction and nonfiction works, story collections, picture books and magazines recommended for readers from preschool through sixth grade. 
  • OmniFile Full Text Select contains magazines and journals from many areas including business, technology, art, library and information science, education, biology, humanities, and law.  Also includes the general Readers' Guide for current issues.
