Energy Savings - Siemens Project

On December 18, 2009, Muskegon Community College contracted Siemens Industry, Inc. to perform work that will result in significant long-term energy savings. The agreement is the result of several months of analysis of the college’s existing heating, cooling, and lighting. This analysis included measuring the overall performance of these energy systems, and the equipment and software that manage them. The result is a performance-based contract with Siemens Industry, Inc. that guarantees cost savings over the period of the contract. These projected savings are detailed below:

Additional savings have been realized by the college over the year. Beginning in March of 2009, the college renewed efforts with an in-house energy savings campaign. Energy consumption over the last 9 months was compared to the same months in 2008. The result was an overall savings of $39,519. Click here for more details on MCC’s in-house energy savings campaign.

Environmental impact is a key factor in energy management efforts at MCC. Working with Siemens, the proposed changes will have profound effects. Based on an expected annual savings of 657,233 kWh of total generated electricity, Muskegon Community College will prevent 1,093,074 lbs. of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere each year* Additionally, the college can expect an annual savings of 20,039 therms of natural gas, resulting in an emissions reduction of 234,657 lbs. of carbon dioxide. The project will also reduce annual nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 1,785 lbs. and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions by 4,673 lbs.

Over the course of the contract term, total carbon emissions will be reduced by 19,915,962 lbs.
