MCC Student Art and Design Exhibition Winners Announced
The award winners of the 48th Annual MCC Student Art and Design Exhibition have been selected. Judging this year’s entries was Michael Arrigo, a multi-disciplinary artist based in Toledo, Ohio. Arrigo has taught painting at Studio Arts Center International in Florence, Italy and served for two years as the director of Young Artists at Work, a nationally recognized arts outreach program for young adults.
A high point of the year for the Creative and Performing Arts Department at MCC, the show features artwork of outstanding merit produced by MCC’s leading student artists over the past academic year. The artwork is selected by MCC’s art faculty from a total of several thousand pieces produced during the past year by several hundred students. An estimated 80 to 100 artists are represented in the exhibition with more than 150 works from a variety of mediums, such as drawings and ceramics.
The winners are: $350 First Place, Paige Hancock for her oriental illustration; $250 Second Place, Fred Bertsch for his surrealist painting; $150 Third Place, William Hickman for his spiral staircase sculpture; $50 Honorable Mentions go to Michael Vallie for his skeleton painting, Emily Zahrt for her graphic design book covers, and Sarah Lindstrom for her graphic design print. The President’s Purchase Awards for the MCC Art Collection went to Michael Schmitt for his abstract graphite drawing. This piece has been acquired for permanent display on campus.
The exhibit continues through September 12 in the Overbrook Gallery. Summer hours are 9am-4:00pm Monday-Friday. Please call 777-0324 for more information.
