MCC to Offer Two Engineering Degrees Starting This Fall

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Beginning in Fall 2012, Muskegon Community College will offer two new degrees – the Associate in Manufacturing Engineering Technology and the Associate in Engineering  - designed for students who wish either to enter the workforce after graduation or to continue their engineering education at a four-year institution.

“Our combination of both the AAS and ASA programs is unique in Michigan,” said Teresa Sturrus, vice president for academic affairs at MCC. “While a handful of community colleges have the AAS in Engineering and others have an ASA in Pre-Engineering, Muskegon Community College is alone in offering its students both options.”

“The Associate in Manufacturing Engineering Technology is specific to our manufacturing community in West Michigan,” explained Tom Martin, chair of MCC’s Industrial Manufacturing Technology Department, who was a catalyst for adding the new degrees on campus.

“This program blends math and science class with the applied technology classes, like computer aided design, machining and electronics.  It also mixes in an element of quality assurance and manufacturing supervision.  This degree was designed to allow students to join the work force immediately after graduation and possibly after one year in the program.”

Martin said that the degree will transfer directly to Western Michigan University and can be earned entirely at the MCC campus through WMU’s Manufacturing Engineering program. The degree is also approved for transfer to Ferris State University.

The Associate in Engineering degree is more general in nature and created for successful math and science students who are undecided about the field of engineering they wish to pursue, said Martin. This degree will transfer to any engineering program meeting the terms of MCC’s macro agreement.

“This gives students many options at the same time they obtain an associate’s degree,” added Martin. For more information, contact Martin at (231) 777-0439.
