If you need a good review of your basic math skills or are a bit apprehensive about Beginning Algebra, the College Success Center offers several math courses for you.  These courses will prepare you to go on to Math 040 and help you overcome any math anxiety from which you may be suffering.  Don't let the lack of a good foundation or math anxiety stop you from reaching your career goals.  Let us help!

 Courses

MATH 036a – Basic Math (3 credit hours)Assignment by COMPASS placement test (0 - 39 on Pre-Algebra)

In this traditional, face-to-face course, students will learn how to work with fractions, decimals, ratios and proportions, percents, English and metric measurements, basics of geometry, as well an introduction to algebra.

The issue of math anxiety will also be addressed in the course.  The material covered is the same as that in the seven MATH 035 modules listed above.  This course is not part of a degree program.

MATH 035 – Basic Math (0.5 credits per module)Assignment by COMPASS placement test (0 - 39 on Pre-Algebra)

This course covers the same material as MATH 036.  However, students meet with an instructor in a one-on-one setting for 15 minutes each week, discussing one topic at a time.  This format requires students to do a bit more work independently, but the pace is slower than that in MATH 036.  Students may register for a maximum of two modules during each 7-week session (half-semester).

Students wishing to take the seven math modules should do so using the following order:

MATH 035B – Fractions (0.5 credit hours): Learn what fractions really mean, how to perform the basic conversions and operations, and how to solve fractions applications
MATH 035C – Decimals (0.5 credit hours): An exploration of place values, operations, and decimal applications
MATH 035G – Ratios, Proportions, & Averages (0.5 credit hours): Examine how to use ratios, proportions, and averages for real-world applications
MATH 035D – Percents (0.5 credit hours): See how to convert between percents, decimals, and fractions as well as how to solve basic percent-application problems
MATH 035E – Measurements (0.5 credit hours): A study of conversions in the English system of measurement and basic geometric formulas and calculations
MATH 035F – Metrics (0.5 credit hours): Learn how to perform metric conversions as well as convert between the English and metric systems of measurement (required for nursing prerequisite)
MATH 035A – Pre-Algebra (0.5 credit hours): An introduction to working with signed numbers and variables

MATH 038 – Pre-Algebra (3 credit hours) – Assignment by COMPASS placement test (40 – 49 on Pre-Algebra or 0 - 25 on Algebra)

This course is designed for students who have mastered basic arithmetic but are not yet prepared for algebra.  Basic math topics are expanded upon and algebra topics such as solving basic equations, factoring, and graphing are introduced.  This course is not part of a degree program.

"FAST TRACK" MATH 036a/038 Combo – This new program covers both Math 036a and Math 038 in one semester.  Students spend six hours every week in class and finish each course in eight weeks.  Because of the accelerated format, there are several requirements:

  • You must attend 2 hours of Supplemental Instruction each week.  This is a small group meeting with a math parapro where you work on homework, get extra help on difficult topics, and review for tests.
  • You must satisfy the Ready to Succeed requirement by testing out of any developmental reading courses
This program was piloted in the Fall Semester 2011 and the Muskegon Chronicle provided the following story: http://www.mlive.com/news/muskegon/index.ssf/2011/10/initiative_at_muskegon_communi.html.  To find out more about the FAST TRACK, contact your counselor, or J.B. Meeuwenberg or Marcia Truxton in the College Success Center.

Note: Supplemental instruction from the math paraprofessional is available for any of the College Success Center math courses listed above.
