Caleb Johnson Finishes Fourth in Nation; Earns All-American and All-Tourney Honors

MCC’s Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) shot a 70 on Friday at the NJCAA Div. II Men’s Golf Championships to finish fourth in the nation and to earn both First Team All-American and First Team All-Tournament honors.

“It was a great finish for Caleb,” said MCC Coach Marty McDermott, whose Jayhawk golfer put together scores of 70-77-77-70  at the Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, IN.  “I am very proud of the way he played. He’s a great kid, very likeable, and was a fan favorite this week.”

Johnson in 12th Place at Golf Nationals; One Day of Competition Remaining

MCC’s Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) remained in contention for All-American status when he shot a 77 on Thursday at the NJCAA Div. II Men’s Golf Championships.

With gusts reaching 30 mph during play, Johnson’s effort placed him in a tie for 12th place with only 18 holes remaining on Friday at The Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, IN. The top 18 finishers will earn All-American honors. Johnson shot a 70 on Tuesday and 77 on Wednesday.

 

MCC’s Johnson Drops to Ninth Place at Nationals

After shooting two-under par yesterday, MCC’s Caleb Johnson struggled on the putting green Wednesday and posted a 77, the highest second day score of the top 25 golfers at the NJCAA National Championships being held at Swan Lake Resort n Plymouth, Ind.

Johnson’s two-day total of 147 (+3) dropped him into a six-way tie for ninth place among the  127 golfers vying for the national title.  Ryan Mulvany of Tyler (Texas) JC remained atop the leader board. He shot a 72 today and is three-under par.

At two-over par, South Mountain (AZ) CC leads the team competition by 11 strokes over John A. Logan (IL).

Competition continues with 18 holes on both Thursday and Friday.

 

 

Johnson in Third Place After First Day at NJCAA Div. II National Championships

MCC’s Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian), the first player off the tee box at 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning, shot a blistering 70 (-2) that has him in a tie for third place in the 128-golfer field at the NJCAA Div. II National Championship.

The competition, being held at Swan lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind., continues with 18-holes of play on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Ryan Mulvany of Tyler (Texas) and Jared Smith of Mississippi Gulf Coast are currently tied for first with scores of 69. One stroke behind are Johnson and Steve Souchek of Josh A. Logan (IL). Logan is in a five-way tie for first with Mississippi Gulf Coast, South Mountain (AZ), Southeast (NE) CC and Tyler (Texas) – all with 294.

 

Caleb Johnson Competing at NJCAA Golf Nationals This Week

MCC’s Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) will be among the nation’s top 110 community college golfers competing Tuesday through Friday at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind., at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Men’s Golf Championship.

A total of 43 teams are represented at the event hosted by Ancilla College (Ind.). Practice rounds took place Sunday and Monday. Johnson is the first competitor off the tee at 7 a.m. on Tuesday. The student-athletes will play 18 holes on each of the four days.

 

Regional Champion Caleb Johnson Paces MCC Men’s Golf to Third Place

MCC freshman Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) took first place at the NJCAA Region XII Men’s Golf Championships on Tuesday in Battle Creek to earn a trip to the NJCAA national championship tournament next week in Indiana.

The Jayhawks missed qualifying for nationals as a team by just two strokes in the 54-hole competition. The top two teams advance to nationals on May 22-25 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, IN. Mott CC (+12) took first while Columbus (OH) State CC (+33) nipped MCC (+33) for second place.

“I am extremely happy for Caleb who played tremendous golf throughout the whole tournament,” said MCC Coach Marty McDermott. “He deserved to win. We just couldn’t hang on to the second spot. We showed tremendous improvement throughout the year. I look forward to having all these guys back next season.”

The other team finishers at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek were: Owens CC (+39), Oakland CC (+40_, Grand Rapids CC (+54), St. Clair County (+78), Henry Ford CC (+102) and Jackson CC (+119).

MCC’s Bill Oosting (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) finished (+10) and was two strokes off from making nationals as an individual. Travis Clarke (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) tied for 16th place (+12), Sam Vos (Grand Haven, MI/West Michigan Christian) tied for 27th (+16), David Bonter (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) tied for 18th  and Scott Belcourt (Edmonton, Alberta/Holy Trinity Catholic) was 50th (+34

‘Phenomenal’ Men’s Golf Effort Puts Jayhawks Currently in Second Place at Regionals

A strong MCC men’s golf team effort on Monday at the NJCAA Regional XII Tournament has the Jayhawks currently in second place with 18 holes to play on Tuesday.

The top two teams in the regional being played at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek will advance to the NJCAA Div. II national championship on May 22-25 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind. The top six individual finishers not on those two squads will also qualify.

“We had a phenomenal day,” said MCC Coach Marty McDermott, whose Jayhawks trail nationally ranked Mott CC by 10 strokes after Monday’s 36 holes of play. “I was pleased with our 302 and being in third place after the first round, but then we shot a 287 – our best round this year – to move up to second. If we can approach that tomorrow, there’s no way we are not going to nationals.”

Mott CC’s Mark Foster (-4) leads MCC stalwart Caleb Johnson (-3) by a stroke for the top spot. McDermott praised the play of Bill Oosting, who carded a -2 in the second round to stand tied for sixth at +2.

Travis Clarke (+6) is tied for 12th, Sam Vos (+8) is tied for 16th, David Bonter (+9) is tied for 25th and Scott Belcourt (+19) tied for 40th.

“I wasn’t surprised by our showing,” said McDermott. “I thought we could compete. We’re looking forward to catching Mott tomorrow.”

MCC Golfers Finish Third at MCCAA Championship

The MCC men’s golf team placed third in the nine-team Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Championships on Tuesday afternoon at The Grande Golf Course in Jackson, MI.

Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) and Travis Clarke (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) both scored 223 to tie for sixth place in the individual competition. Scott Belcourt (Edmonton, Alberta/Holy Trinity Catholic) and Bill Oosting (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) tallied 239 each to tie for 25th, while Sam Vos (Grand Haven, MI/West Michigan Christian) shot 246 for 31st and Dave Bonter (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) 248 for 34th place.

Oakland CC beat Mott CC by eight strokes for the MCCAA title scoring 880. MCC was third with 916, followed by Grand Rapids CC 945, Schoolcraft 950, St. Clair County CC 954, Henry Ford CC 955, Jackson CC 971 and Delta CC 989.

“We played extremely well,” said Jayhawks Coach Marty McDermott. “Travis and Caleb had an excellent tournament. We look forward to regionals next week.”

MCC Golfers in Third at MCCAA; 18 Holes to Play Tuesday

The MCC men’s golfer are currently in third place after the first day of competition at the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Championships at The Grande Golf Course in Jackson, MI.

Oakland CC leads the competition after two rounds with 583, followed by Mott CC 600, Muskegon CC 617, Schoolcraft 631, Grand Rapids CC 632, St. Clair County CC 639, Henry Ford CC 640, Jackson CC 649, Delta CC 651 and Ancilla DNF.

Oakland’s Nick Roberson and Mott’s Jon Walraven are tied for first with even par scores of 144. The next three leaders are all from Oakland CC.

Muskegon’s competitors, their places and scores are: 7. Travis Clarke (+4), 9. Caleb Johnson (+8), 21, Scott Belcourt (+13), 27. Sam Vos (+17), 32. Bill Oosting (+19) and 43. David Bonter (+28).

“We played two good rounds and put ourselves in position to qualify for regionals,” said MCC Coach Marty McDermott, whose squad needs to finish in the top five to earn a regional berth.

Caleb Johnson Wins Conference Title; MCC Team Edged by a Point for Championship

MCC golfer Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) finished with a 286 (-2) to capture the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference medalist honors at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, IN on Friday.

Grand Rapids CC defeated MCC by just one stroke 1225 to 1226 for the conference title. The Jayhawks led by six strokes going into Friday’s event, having shot 611 to GRCC’s 617 at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek, MI last Friday.

“It was a good learning experience,” said a disappointed MCC Coach Marty McDermott. “We have to learn how to hold on to the lead.”

Johnson, who led after the first day, took the title by shooting 70-77 on Friday. The other Jayhawks scores were: Travis Clarke (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) 75-77, Sam Vos (Grand Haven, MI/West Michigan Christian) 80-84, Scott Belcourt (Edmonton, Alberta/Holy Trinity Catholic) 81-80, Bill Oosting (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) 82-85, and David Bonter (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) 75-82.

MCC Golf Leads MCCAA Western Conference Tourney at Midway Point

The MCC men’s golf team owns a six-stroke lead over Grand Rapids CC halfway through the MCCAA Western Conference Championship Tournament. The Jayhawks are in the first after 36 holes of action on Friday at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek, MI.

The final 36 holes will be played next Friday, May 4, at Swan Lake Golf Course in Plymouth, IN.

MCC’s Caleb Johnson (69-74=143) and Travis Clarke (74-77=151) are currently first and second, respectively, in the individual standings. The Jayhawks also received a strong performance from Bill Oosting (75-82=157). Other MCC finishes included: Sam Vos (84-78=162), Scott Belcourt (82-82=164) and David Bonter (83-82=165).

MCC leads with 611, followed by Grand Rapids CC 617, Jackson CC 663, Ancilla 801 and Glen Oaks 993.

“Today is the best we’ve played as a team this year,” said MCC Coach Marty McDermott. “Part of that was we had better conditions today. Caleb and Travis played extremely well, and Bill came through for us with a 75 on the first 18. It’s tough mentally and physically playing 36 holes.”

Men’s Golf Takes Third at Jackson CC Invite

The MCC men’s golf team placed third at the five-team Jackson CC Invitational held Monday afternoon at The Grande Golf Course in Jackson, MI.

Grand Rapids CC won the team competition with 326, followed by Jackson CC 332, MCC and Columbus State 344, and Ancilla 397.

“The conditions were tough with 30 mph winds,” said MCC Coach Marty McDermott. “We need to do a better job of managing the course.”

Travis Clarke (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) led the Jayhawks with 81. Other MCC scorers were: Sam Vos (Grand Haven, MI/West Michigan Christian) 85, Scott Belcourt (Edmonton, Alberta/Holy Trinity Catholic) 87,

Bill Oosting (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) 91 and Dave Bonter (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) 91.

 

Men’s Golf Takes Second at Home Invitational

The MCC men’s golf team placed second in the tightly contested five-team Muskegon CC Invitational at Stonegate Golf Club in Twin Lake, MI on Friday afternoon.

Five strokes separated the top four teams. Mott CC won with 295, followed by MCC and Grand Rapids CC with 298, Oakland CC with 300 and Schoolcraft College 330.

The Mott tandem of Mark Foster and Jon Walraven tied for medalist honors with 71, with Jayhawks Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) one stroke off the lead by shooting an even par 72.  Other MCC scorers were: Scott Belcourt (Edmonton, Alberta/Holy Trinity Catholic) and Sam Vos (Grand Haven, MI/West Michigan Christian)  tied for 6th with 75, Travis Clarke (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) tied for 13th with 76,  David Bonter (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) tied for 28th with 85 and Bill Oosting (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) tied for 31st with 88.

“We played excellent today,” said MCC Coach Marty McDermott. “Mott was just a little better than us.”

Men’s Golf Third at GRCC, Belcourt Shoots 78

The MCC men’s golf team finished third in the nine-team Grand Rapids CC Invitational on Monday afternoon when winds gusted to 35 mph at Egypt Valley Golf Course in Ada, MI.

Grand Rapids CC won with 321, followed by Mott CC 324, Muskegon CC 335, Oakland CC 342, Schoolcraft 352, St. Clair CC 354, Henry Ford CC and Jackson CC 365, Kirtland CC 390 and Ancilla 434.

MCC’s Scott Belcourt (Edmonton, Alberta/Holy Trinity) and Grand Rapids CC’s Derek Roe led the field with their scores of 78, but Roe beat Belcourt for medalist honors in the first playoff hole.

“Scott played extremely well under some of the toughest conditions and the toughest course we will see this year,” said MCC Coach Marty McDermott.

Other Jayhawk scorers were; Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) 84 (tied for 12th), Sam Vos (Grand Haven, MI/West Michigan Christian) 85 (tied for 17th), Travis Clarke (Muskegon,MI/Reeths-Puffer) 88 (tied for 25th) and Bill Oosting Muskegon, MI/Orchard View)93 (41st).

Clarke Leads Golfers to MCC Invite Win

MCC freshman Travis Clarke (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) fired a 73 and then birdied the second playoff hole to take medalist honors on Monday afternoon at Lincoln Golf Course, where the Jayhawks won the four-team MCC Invitational.

The hosts scored 303 for first place, followed by Grand Rapids CC 305, Jackson CC 313 and Ancilla College 404.

“I am really happy for all the guys,” said MCC Coach Marty McDermott. “We played solid golf with five guys in the 70s. Travis is one of our most dedicated golfers. The work he puts in between matches really paid off for him today. He deserved this win.”

Men’s Golf Places Fourth at Ancilla Invite

MCC’s Caleb Johnson’s (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) fired a 78 to lead the Jayhawks men’s golf team to a fourth place finish in the six-team Ancilla College Invite on Monday afternoon at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

Mott CC and Oakland CC led the tourney with identical team scores of 325, followed by Grand Rapids CC with 328, MCC 329, Jackson CC 351 and Trine University JV 354.

The Jayhawks’ Johnson shot a six-under to finish in a four-way tie for first place with Justin Post of Oakland CC, Mark Foster of Mott CC and Derek Roe of Grand Rapids CC. Post won top honors in a playoff.

“We played very well in some tough conditions,” said MCC Head Coach Marty McDermott. “It was very windy out there today.”

Ryan Oosting (Twin Lake, MI/Reeths-Puffer) shot a 79, Travis Clarke (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) an 83, and Scott Belcourt (Edmonton, Alberta/Holy Trinity Catholic) an 89.

Other MCC scores were; Sam Vos (Grand Haven, MI/West Michigan Christian) 83, Dustyne Corpe (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) and Dave Bonter (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) with 91, and Bill Oosting (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) with  94.

MCC Golfers Finish 14th at Ron Marshall Spring Fling in Alabama

The MCC men’s golf team finished 14th in the 19-team 11th Annual Ron Marshall Spring Fling held over the weekend in Scottsboro, Ala.

Freshman Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) finished +3 to lead the Jayhawk golfers with his 17th place individual finish in the three-day competition at Goose Pond Colony. Two Meridian (MS) CC golfers, Dylan Brown and Jake Stirling, each finished -10 to earn medalist honors.

Meridian won the team competition with 842 (-22). The only other team to finish under par was second place Darton (GA) College 851 (-13). The other team scores were: Central Alabama 877 (+13), Mississippi Gulf 866 (+22), Wallace (AL) St. 887 (+23) Faulkner (Al) 888 (+24), Rend Lake (IL) 889 (+25), Walters (TN) 897 (+33), Clarendon (TX) 901 (+37), John A. Logan (IL) 902 (+38), Mott CC (+39), Iowa Western 907 (+43), Illinois Central 916 (+52), Muskegon CC 929 (+65), Georgia Military 945 (+81), Grand Rapids CC 952 (+88), Vincennes (IN) 970 (+106), Kaskaskia (IL) 1,040 (+176), Spoon River (IL) 1,126 (+262).

In addition to Johnson, MCC’s individual scores were: Travis Clarke (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) tied for 46th with 230 (+14), Bill Oosting (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) tied for 83rd with 243 (+27), Ryan Oosting (Twin Lake, MI/Reeths-Puffer) tied for 91st with 247 (+31), Scott Belcourt (Edmonton, Alberta/Holy Trinity Catholic)  tied for 93rd with 248 (+32).

Caleb Johnson’s 72 Leads MCC Golfers After First Day in Alabama

The MCC men’s golf team opened the 2012 season on Thursday at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro, Ala., where the Jayhawks were led by freshman Caleb Johnson (North Muskegon, MI/West Michigan Christian) who shot a 72. MCC was in 14th place after the first day in the 19-team competition.

Freshman Scott Belcourt (Edmonton, Alberta/Holy Trinity Catholic) fired a 75, Travis Clarke (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) scored a 78, and cousins Ryan Oosting (Twin Lake, Mi/Reeths-Puffer) and Bill Oosting (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) each carded an 85.

Coach Marty McDermott was pleased with his squad’s performance in its first real test out-of-doors competing against a field filled with traditional powers.

Darton (GA) College led the 19-team competition with 276. The Cavaliers were followed by Meridian (MS) CC 280, Central Alabama CC 292, Faulkner (AL) St. CC 293, Clarendon (Texas) 294, Mott CC 295, Walters (TN) State CC 295, Wallace (AL) State CC 296, Rend Lake (IL) College 297, Illinois Central 298, John A. Logan (IL) 298, Iowa Western CC 302, Mississippi Gulf Coast 302, Muskegon CC 310, Grand Rapids CC 311, Georgia Military 316, Vincennes (IN) 317, Kaskaskia (IL) 347 and Spoon River (IL) 389.

Meridian’s Dylan Brown and Rend Lake’s Josh Harp tied for medalist honors with their scores of 67. For MCC. Johnson was tied for 15th to pace the Jayhawks.
