Baseball Ends Season with Loss to Grand Rapids CC in Regional

The MCC baseball season came to an end on Friday, May 16, with a 3-2 loss to Grand Rapids CC in the NJCAA Region 12 competition in Battle Creek, Mich.

The Jayhawks, who won the MCCAA championship this season, suffered their second loss in as many days in the double-elimination regional play. MCC finishes the year with a 35-18 record.

GRCC jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and never trailed. MCC cut the lead to 2-1 the next inning before GRCC opened a 3-1 margin with another tally in the sixth inning. MCC’s final run came in the next inning. The Jayhawks outhit GRCC 7-6 but were plagued by five errors in the contest.

MCC catcher Josh Wieten (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Right hander Damon Proctor (Cheboygan, MI/Cheboygan), who picked up the loss, went five and-a-third innings, allowing five hits, five walks and three earned runs. Reliever Spencer Peters (Shelby, MI/Shelby) allowed a hit, a walk and no runs.

 

Baseball Loses in Extra Innings to Vincennes in Regional Opener

After winning the MCCAA Conference, the Muskegon Jayhawks lost 6-4 in 13 innings to Vincennes in the opening game of the Region XII Tournament on Thursday, May 15 in Battle Creek, Mich. The contest, which had been postponed by rain for a day-and-a-half, ended after midnight.

Baseball Opens Regionals vs. Vincennes on Wednesday

The NJCAA Region 12 Division II baseball Tournament will be played Wednesday-Saturday, May 14-17, at Bailey Park in battle Creek, Mich. Muskegon Community College opens plays against Vincennes University at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Baseball Captures First-Ever Outright League Championship

The MCC baseball team shutout host Kellogg CC 9-0 and 3-0 on Thursday afternoon, May 8, in Battle Creek, Mich., to finish its Michigan Community College Athletic Association slate with a 21-5 record and the first outright baseball league title in school history.

The team, now 35-16 overall, scored four runs in the first inning of the 9-0 opening win. Freshman righthander Kyle Lawson (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores) threw the shutout scattering five hits. Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta) and Adrian Anderson (Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon) each had two hits to pace the Jayhawks.

In game two, freshman Damon Proctor (Cheboygan, MI/Cheboygan) pitched a one-hit shutout for the Jayhawks. MCC had only four hits, but Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) produced a triple and Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) added a double.

The Jayhawks will open NJCAA Region 12 play on Wednesday, May 14, at 4 p.m. against an yet-to-be determined opponent from Ohio or Indiana.

Baseball Shuts Out Ancilla in Doubleheader Sweep

The Muskegon Jayhawks traveled to Donaldson, Ind. Tuesday, May 6 to play Ancilla College. The Jayhawks swept a Doubleheader from Ancilla by the scores of 8- 0 and 11-0 in 5 innings.

 

In the opening game, sophomore Nick Keller (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City Central HS) improved to 8-0 by pitching the full game and striking out 8 batters. Freshman Jake Wagenmaker (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) homered for the Jayhawks and sophomore Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge HS), sophomore Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS), sophomore Hunter Stinger (Boyne City, MI/Petoskey HS) and freshman Luke Bunting (Ithaca, MI/Ithaca HS) all had 2 hits.

 

In the nightcap game, sophomore Brandon Melchert (Scottville, MI/ Mason County Central HS) improved to 6-0 allowing just 2 hits. Freshman Luke Bunting (Ithaca, MI/Ithaca HS) led the Jayhawks with 2 RBI’s on two hits.

 

The Jayhawks are now 33-16 overall and 19-5 in the conference and finish the regular season on Thursday, May 8 in Battle Creek, Mich. against Kellogg CC.

Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Jackson CC; Remains in First Place

The Muskegon Jayhawks split a Doubleheader with Jackson CC on Sunday, May 4 losing 1-0 and winning 4-1.

In Game 1: The Jayhawks stranded 10 runners and had only 1 hit. In the 6th inning the Jayhawks had bases loaded with one out and couldn’t score.

In Game 2: Freshman Damon Proctor (Cheboygan, MI/Cheboygan HS) was the winning pitcher with sophomore Nick Keller (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City Central HS) picking up the save. Sophomore Hunter Stinger (Boyne City, MI/Petoskey HS) drove in 2 runs with a double.

The Jayhawks now hold a one game lead with four games to go. Their overall record is 31-16 and 17-5 in the league. They play at Ancilla in Donaldson, Ind. on Tuesday, May 6.

Baseball Sweeps Kalamazoo Valley CC and Improve to 16-4 in the League

The Muskegon Jayhawks swept visiting Kalamazoo Valley on Wednesday, April 30 by the scores of 4-1 and 12-2 in 5 innings.

In Game 1: Sophomore Nick Keller (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City Central HS) threw a complete game striking out 4 and giving up only 4 hits. Sophomore Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) led the Jayhawks at the plate with 2 hits.

In Game 2: Sophomore Brandon Melchert (Scottville, MI/Mason County Central HS) was the winning pitcher only allowing 4 hits. Sophomore Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge HS) had 2 hits including a Homerun and 2 RBI while Ribecky added two of his own.

The Jayhawks are now 16-4 in the league and 30-15 overall and finish their home season on Saturday, May 3 against Jackson CC game starts at 1 pm.

Baseball Splits Doubleheader Slugfest Against Davenport JV

The Muskegon Jayhawks split a DH with Davenport on Sunday, April 27 losing 7-4 and winning 15-12. The Jayhawks remain in first place in the MCCAA Conference.

In Game 1: Sophomore Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge HS) led the team with had 2 hits, but it wasn’t enough for the win.

In Game 2: Freshman Matt Jesse (Saginaw, MI/Hemlock HS), sophomore Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta HS), sophomore Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS), and sophomore Hunter Stinger (Boyne City, MI/Boyne City HS) all had 3 hits. Stinger had 3 RBI’s. The Jayhawks were down twice late in the game a found a way to win. The Jayhawks are now 28-15 overall and 14-4 in their conference.

The Jayhawks will play host Kalamazoo Valley CC on Tuesday, April 29. First game of the double header will start at 2pm.

Baseball Remains First in MCCAA

The Muskegon Jayhawks split a DH with Delta Saturday, April 26, losing the first game 2-1 and winning the nightcap 4-3. The Jayhawks kept their two game lead in the MCCAA by gaining a split.

In Game 1: The Jayhawks struggled at the plate with only had 2 hits.

In Game 2: Sophomore Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) threw out the tying run to end the game. Sophomore Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta HS), Chandonnet, and sophomore Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon Catholic Central) each had 2 hits contributing to the Jayhawks four runs.

The Jayhawks are now 27-14 overall and 14-4 in the conference and play a non-league DH at home Sunday, April 27 against Davenport starting at 1pm.

 

Coach Pohlman Gets 500th Win; Baseball Sweeps Lake Michigan

Veteran MCC baseball skipper Cap Pohlman reached a milestone on Thursday, April 24, when his Jayhawks swept a doubleheader against Lake Michigan College to put him over 500 career wins at the college.

“Many thanks to all of my players of the past 16 years and to my many assistants who played a major part in building the program and helping develop fine young men,” said the grateful coach, whose team downed Lake Michigan 5-3 and 13-11.

Pohlman, who now owns a 501-306 career mark at MCC, was a standout pitcher at Central Michigan University, where he was later inducted into the CMU Hall of Fame. The Saginaw, Mich., native was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers and played in the minor leagues until sustaining a career-ending injury. He was an assistant coach at CMU and at Miami University in Ohio. He posted a 351-145 record in 18 years as a scholastic coach and was inducted in 2002 into the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

The Jayhawks gave Pohlman his 500th win by winning game one. MCC sophomore righthander Nick Keller (Traverse City, MI/Central) threw a complete game, allowing just four hits while striking out nine batters for the win. Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) had two hits and Reid Beffrey (Bay City, MI/John Glenn) added two RBI.

In the nightcap, Zack Courtade (Ravenna, MI/Ravenna) got a four-out save to preserve the lead. Patrick Giddings, Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Catholic Central), Jake Wagenmaker (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) each had two hits. Josh Wieten (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) also added two hits, including a three- run homer, to finish with five RBI.

The Jayhawks travel to second place Delta College on Saturday.

Baseball Sweeps Cornerstone JV

The Muskegon Jayhawks swept a non-league doubleheader from Cornerstone JV on Wednesday, April 23 by the scores of 10-0 in 6 innings and 13-11.

In Game 1, sophomore Brandon Melchert (Scottville, MI/Mason County Central) threw the shutout, giving up only one hit with an outstanding performance. Sophomore Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon Catholic Central) and Luke Bunting (Ithaca, MI. Ithaca HS) led the hitters with two hits each.

In Game 2, the Jayhawks let a 7-0 game slip away to a 9-11 score and then came back in the bottom of the 7th with a 2-out 3-Run Homerun by freshman Nick MacGirr (Beulah, MI/Benzie Central HS). Bunting and sophomore Hunter Stinger (Boyne City, MI/Petoskey HS) each had 3 hits and freshman Matt Jesse (Saginaw, MI/Hemlock HS) and sophomore Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) added 2 more hits each.

The Jayhawks are now 24-13 on the season and play at Lake Michigan College in a league Doubleheader on Thursday, April 24 in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Baseball Earns Home Split vs. Grand Rapids

The Jayhawk baseball unit split its doubleheader with visiting Grand Rapids CC, losing the opener 5-3 before taking the nightcap 6-2 on Monday, April 22.

In the first game, MCC stranded 14 base runners. Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Catholic Central) belted a two-run homer.

In the second contest, MCC righthander Damon Proctor picked up the win striking out six, while sophomore lefty Brandon Melchert (Scottville, MI/Mason County Central) earned the save. Adrian Anderson (Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon) led the Jayhawks with three hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBI. Matt Jesse (Saginaw, MI/Hemlock) added a pair of hits and two RBI.

The 22-13 Jayhawks are now are now 11-3 in in the conference. They host Cornerstone Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Baseball Suffers Tough Home Loss

The Muskegon Jayhawk Baseball team dropped a single game to Aquinas on Monday, April 21 by the score of 9-6. Seven Jayhawk hurlers gave up nine runs. Sophomore Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta HS) had three hits including a Three-run Homerun, while sophomore Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge HS) added two more hits.

The Jayhawks are now 21-12 and play Grand Rapids CC tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22 in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Muskegon Sweeps Doubleheader Behind the Keller Twins

The Muskegon Jayhawks swept a DH from visiting Macomb on Saturday, April 19 by the scores of 13-0 in 5 innings and 10-0 in 6 innings.

In Game 1: Sophomore Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View HS) and sophomore Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta HS) led off the first inning with back to back Homeruns and the Jayhawks coasted from there. Sophomore Nick Keller (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City Central HS) was the winning pitcher giving up 2 hits. The Jayhawks had 7 only hits, but 5 of them were Homeruns. Sophomore Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) added a 2 run blast in the first inning and Sophomore Josh Wieten (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View HS) had a 3 run blast in the 2nd. Sophomore Hunter Stinger (Boyne City, MI/Petoskey HS) also homered in the 2nd.

In Game 2: Sophomore Brad Keller (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City Central) was the winning pitcher giving up only 3 hits. Freshman Luke Bunting (Ithaca, MI/Ithaca HS) led the Jayhawks with 3 hits and 4 RBI. Stephon Chandonnet and Kory Brown followed with 2 hits each.

The Jayhawks are now 21-11 overall and 10-2 in the league. They play a single game at 4pm on Monday, April 21 against Aquinas College at home in Muskegon Mich.

Baseball Takes Two from Henry Ford

The Muskegon Community College Jayhawks swept a doubleheader from Henry Ford on Thursday, April 17 by the scores of 15-4 in 5 innings and 5-3.

In Game 1, the Jayhawks had 15 hits led by sophomore Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) with 3 hits including an inside-the- park homer and a double. He drove in 5 runs. Sophomore Josh Wieten (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View HS) also had 3 hits including a Homerun and 4 RBI’s. Freshman Adrian Anderson (Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon HS) also had 3 hits including a double and a homerun. Sophomore Brody Anderson (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven HS) was the winner in relief throwing all 5 innings and only giving up 1 hit.

In Game 2, sophomore Caleb Roberts (Boyne City, MI/Boyne City HS) was the winning pitcher while sophomore Nick Keller (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City Central HS) picked up the save. Sophomore Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta HS) had 3 hits to lead the Jayhawks. Wieten added 2 Homeruns and 4 RBI’s to win the game for the Jayhawks.

MCC is now 19 -11 overall and 8-2 in the conference. They play at home Saturday, April 19 against Macomb CC at 2pm.

Baseball Crushes Glen Oaks in Doubleheader

The Muskegon Jayhawks swept visiting Glen Oaks CC on Wednesday, April 16. The Jayhawks outscored Glen Oaks 18-1 in 5 innings in game one and 6-1 in game two.

In the opener 1, the Jayhawks exploded for 9 runs in the 2nd inning and Hammered Glen Oaks with 17 hits. Sophomore Hunter Stinger (Boyne City, MI/Petoskey HS) led the way with 3 hits; 2 doubles and a homerun for four RBI’s. Sophomore Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge HS) added 2 hits including a homerun and sophomore Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta HS) added another homerun for the Jayhawks. Sophomore Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon Catholic Central HS), sophomore Josh Wieten (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View HS), and freshman Matt Jesse (Saginaw, MI/Hemlock HS) each added 2 hits. On the mound, freshman Damon Proctor (Cheboygan, MI/Cheboygan HS) struck out 10 and only gave up 3 hits.

In the second game, freshman Kyle Lawson (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) was the winning pitcher striking out 11, walking none, and held Glen Oaks to only two 2 hits. The Jayhawks scored 4 runs in the 6th to break open a close game. Sophomore Hunter Stinger (Boyne, MI/Petoskey HS) had a key two out 2 RBI single. The Jayhawks are now 17-11 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

The Jayhawks look to continue their win streak Thursday, April 17th at home against Henry Ford CC. The game is a doubleheader starting at 2pm.

Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Lansing

The Muskegon Jayhawks split a Double-Header with Lansing CC on Saturday, April 12. The Jayhawks lost their first game 4-3, but came back strong by winning the nightcap 8-3.

The Jayhawks struggled in the first game giving up 7 walks and 5 errors that led to all 4 runs. Sophomore Josh Wieten (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View HS) led the Jayhawks offensive with 2 hits.

In game two, Sophomore Caleb Roberts (Boyne City, MI/Boyne City HS) threw a complete game. Freshman Adrian Anderson (Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon HS) and Sophomore Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge HS) each had 2 hits; Giddings hits got 2 RBI for the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks are now 15-11 and 4-2 in the conference. They have a few home doubleheaders this week with Glen Oaks on Tuesday, April 15 at 2pm, Henry Ford on Thursday, April 17 at 2pm, and Macomb on Saturday, April 19 at 2pm.

Baseball Earns Split with Mott CC

The MCC baseball team hosted Mott CC for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 10, when the Jayhawks bounced back from an error-laden 6-1 opening loss to pound out a 12-2 win in the six-inning nightcap.

In the opener, the Jayhawks allowed five Mott runs on walks and four errors. In game two, though, MCC hurler Damon Proctor (Cheboygan, MI/Cheboygan) pitched a solid 5 2/3 innings for the win, while the prodigious Jayhawk offense exploded for 14 hits – 10 more than in the previous contest. Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) led the charge with three three hits. Adrian Anderson (Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon), Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Catholic Central) and Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta) each added two hits. Ribecky was 3-for-5 with a pair of walks for the day.

The 14-10 MCC unit will take its 3-1 league mark into Saturday’s game at Lansing CC.

Baseball Sweeps Western Michigan Club

The Jayhawks swept a doubleheader from the WMU Club Team Wednesday, April 9, at home 12-2 and 15-4, with MCC pushing across plenty of runs in the early innings of both contests.

In game one, the Jayhawks started scoring runs quickly. Sophomore Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge HS) had four hits, sophomore Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta HS), freshman Adrian Anderson (Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon HS), and sophomore Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) each added two hits. Ribecky led the Jayhawks with four RBI and Anderson followed with three.

In game two, MCC scored quickly again, scoring 12 runs in two innings. Freshman Matt Jesse (Saginaw, MI/Hemlock HS) and sophomore Josh Wieten (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View HS) each had two hits, Wieten had a great game hitting a homerun and driving in four RBI.

The Jayhawks, now 13-9 on the season, host Mott CC in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 10, at 2 p.m.

Baseball Sweeps St. Clair CC in League Opener Doubleheader

The Jayhawks played at home Sunday, April 6th against St. Clair CC Skippers. Muskegon swept a Doubleheader to open the league season by the scores of 10-2 and 4-0.

Sophomore Nick Keller (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City Central) threw a complete game in the opener striking out 4. The Jayhawks were hitting well. Sophomore Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta HS) and freshman Matt Jesse (Saginaw, MI/Hemlock HS) each had 2 RBI in the first game.

In Game 2, freshman Kyle Lawson (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) threw a 1-hitter for 6 2/3 innings and sophomore Zack Courtade (Ravenna, MI/Ravenna HS) got a save without letting a run score. The Jayhawks only managed 3 hits in the 2nd game, but with smart base running scored four runs. A big plus for the Jayhawks was not committing a single error in the Doubleheader.

The Jayhawks are now 11- 9 on the season and 2-0 in their conference. The Jayhawks will play W.M.U. Club Wednesday, April 9th at 4pm and Mott CC Thursday, April 10th at 2pm.

Baseball No-Hits Western; Sweeps Twin Bill

The baseball team took two victories over the visiting Western Michigan Club Team, 13-0 and 8-1, in a doubleheader played Wednesday, April 2.

The Jayhawk pitching duo of Damon Proctor (Cheboygan, MI/Cheboygan) and Brad Keller (Traverse City, MI/Central) combined for a no-hitter in the opener. Proctor picked up the win with nine strikeouts and only one walk allowed. MCC was paced by Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) and Josh Wieten (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) with three hits apiece. Reid Beffrey )Bay City, MI/John Glenn) and Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta) each added two hits.

In the second contest, Caleb Roberts (Boyne City, MI/Boyne City)pitched four perfect innings of relief to pick up the win, while striking out a trio of Western batters. Kory Brown and Josh Wieten led the Jayhawks with two hits each.

MCC is now 9-9 overall and opens league play on Saturday against St. Clair CC at 1 p.m.|

Baseball Sweeps Davenport JV

The MCC baseball team swept a doubleheader, 12-1 and 13-0, against the Davenport JV on Friday, March 28, in Grand Rapids, MI.

In the opener, winning pitcher Nick Keller (Traverse City, MI/Central) fanned four batters while scattering five hits. Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta), Josh Wieten (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View) and Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) each had two hits. Giddings had three RBI and Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Catholic Central) hit a three-run homer.

In the second game, Jayhawk hurler Kyle Lawson (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores) allowed just one hit and struck out 10 for the shutout. Kory Brown led the MCC attack with four hits. Jason Ribecky and Josh Wieten each had three hits, with Patrick Giddings and Reid Beffrey (Bay City, MI/John Glenn) each adding two hits. Wieten had three RBI.

The Jayhawks are now 7-9 and play a twin bill with Western Michigan Club Team on Wednesday.

Baseball Smashes Cornerstone JV 16-0

The Muskegon Jayhawks traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich. to play Cornerstone JV Thursday, March 20. The Jayhawks started with a 10 run first inning and never looked back in a 16-0 shutout.

Freshman Adrian Anderson (Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon HS) had 2 hits including a Homerun. Both sophomore Hunter Stinger (Boyne City, MI/Petoskey HS) and freshman Reid Beffrey (Bay City, MI/Bay City John Glen HS) had 2 hits each while Kory Brown added 3 RBI. His brother sophomore Brad Keller (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City Central HS) struck out 3 in a 1-2-3 7th inning.

The Jayhawks are now 5-9 on the year. The Jayhawks will play next Tuesday, March 25 in Grand Rapids, Mich. at Davenport College.

Baseball Loses Twice in Ohio

The MCC baseball team lost twice on Saturday, March 15, 5-2 to ninth-ranked Kellogg CC and 6-5 to host Sinclair CC in Dayton, Ohio.

Against Kellogg, Kyle Lawson (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores) pitched five solid innings but the bullpen performance and a lack of hitting hindered the Jayhawks. MCC ended a 26-inning scoreless drought by pushing across two runs in the 7th inning but stranded the tying runs on base. Jason Ribecky (Muskegon. MI/Catholic Central) and Reid Beffrey (Bay City, MI/John Glenn) each had two hits for the Jayhawks.

In the second contest, the Jayhawks fell behind 3-1 but rallied for a 5-3 lead, only to lose the game in the bottom of the seventh. Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta) had three hits and Reid Beffrey had two hits and two RBI.

The Jayhawks, now 4-9 overall, are scheduled to play at Cornerstone on Thursday.

Baseball Earns Split with Brunswick CC

The MCC baseball team split its doubleheader with the Brunswick CC Dolphins, winning 3-2 and losing 6-4, on Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Sophomore righthander Nick Keller (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City) earned the win in the opener by throwing a four-hit, complete game. In game two, Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Catholic Central) had two hits, including a homerun, while Reid Beffrey (Bay City, MI/John Glenn) added a two-run double for the 4-5 Jayhawks.

USC-Sumter Baseball Takes Two from MCC

The MCC Baseball team lost 3-1 and 12-1 to the University of South Carolina-Sumter on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC.

In the opener, the Jayhawks jumped to a 3-1 lead but allowed two runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fourth and sixth frames. Three errors along with nine walks by five MCC pitchers fueled the USC-Sumter comeback. Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) led the Jayhawks with two doubles, while Patrick Giddings added two hits. Chandonnet and Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Catholic Central)each had two RBI.

In game two, the Jayhawks only managed two hits in the five-inning game, in which MCC pitchers walked 13 Sumter batters.

MCC plays Brunswick CC on Thursday and finishes with a doubleheader against Lincoln Land CC on Friday morning.

Baseball Sweeps Southeastern CC; Melchert Dominates in Second Game

The Jayhawk baseball squad swept a doubleheader against Southeastern CC, 5-2 and 5-1, on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Now 3-2 overall, MCC played error-free ball in winning the opener behind the six-inning performance of Damon Proctor (Cheboygan, MI/Cheboygan), who amassed five strikeouts, while only walking four and allowing three hits for his first win this season. Zach Courtade (Ravenna, MI/Ravenna) picked up his first save.

Reid Beffrey(Bay City, MI/John Glenn) led the Jayhawks with two hits, including a home run. Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) also had two hits, including a triple.

In game two, Brandon Melchert (Scottville, MI/Mason County Central), making his first start since his Tommy John surgery, threw a complete game. The redshirt sophomore scattered four hits, walked one and struck out 11 batters. Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) paced the Jayhawks with two hits.

The Jayhawks broke a 1-0 game open with a four-run fourth inning. Stephon Chandonnet led off with a triple, Hunter Stinger (Boyne City, MI/Petoskey) doubled and then moved to third on a wild pitch. Aaron Gilbert (Alma, MI/Alma) was hit by a pitch. Luke Bunting (Ithaca, MI/Ithaca) walked on a wild pitch scoring Stinger and leading to two more runs on an automatic play run by the Jayhawks that ended with an error scoring Bunting.

The Jayhawks play a twin bill with U.S.C. – Sumter today at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Baseball Loses 4-2 to Coastal Carolina

The MCC baseball squad couldn’t overcome an early 3-0 deficit as the Jayhawks dropped a 4-2 decision to the Coastal Carolina Club Team on Monday, Feb. 24, at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach South Carolina.

MCC fell behind 3-0 early, after committing and error and allowing three walks, and never recovered. Offensively, the Jayhawks mustered a total of four hits.

Baseball Opens Season With a Split

The MCC baseball team opened the 2014 season on Sunday, Feb. 23, with a win and a loss at the Pepsi Invitational in Florence, S.C.

In the opener, the Jayhawks suffered from the jitters in a 7-6 loss to USC-Lancaster. MCC made three costly errors and walked seven batters with four earned runs allowed by five Jayhawk pitchers. Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta), Patrick Giddings (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) and Luke Bunting (Ithaca, MI/Ithaca) each had two hits. Giddings knocked in 4 runs.

MCC bounced back with a 7-2 victory over host Florence-Darlington Tech in the second contest. Pitcher Kyle Lawson (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores) earned the win throwing 6 2/3 innings and giving up five hits, four walks and one earned run. Offensively, the Jayhawks were led by Jason Ribecky (Muskegon, MI/Catholic Central) with two hits and Joey Kniss (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City West) with two RBI.

On the day, the Jayhawks were a perfect 9-of-9 in stolen bases. MCC faces the Coastal Carolina Club team tonight.
