Ollie Shepard Finishes 101st at NJCAA Men’s Golf Championships

NJCAA Men’s Golf National Tournament at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind. started Tuesday, May 20 and finished Friday, May 23. Jayhawk’s standout sophomore Ollie Shepardson (Kent City, MI/Kent City HS) battled the best players in the nation. He finished 101st with a score of 336. Ollie’s scores per round were: 84, 88, 82, and 82.

MCC’s Shepardson Begins Play at Nationals

Ollie Shepardson (Kent City, MI/Kent City), the lone Jayhawk golfer competing at NJCAA Division II National Championships, shot a +12 score of 84 in the first round of competition Tuesday, May 20, at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

Currently tied for 102nd place in the 122-player field, Shepardson will tee off at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21. Sebastian Ottoya of Seminole (Okla.) State, holds a three-stroke lead for first place with a -5 mark of 67. The Walters (Tenn.) State Senators are the top team at the 6,876-yard Black Course at Swan Lake.

Sophomore Stephon Chandonnet (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS), Sophomore Kory Brown (Sparta, MI/Sparta HS) and sophomore Josh Wieten (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View HS) each had 2 hits.
The Jayhawks will play Grand Rapids CC in Battle Creek, Mich. at 11:30 am Friday, May 16.

Men’s Golf Places Fourth in Region; Oliver Shepardson Headed to Nationals

The MCC men’s golf team placed fourth in the NJCAA Region 12 Championships on Tuesday, May 13, but Jayhawk sophomore golfer Oliver Shepardson placed seventh individually to qualify for the NJCAA Division II Championships on May 20-23 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

Shepardson (Kent City, MI/Kent City) carded rounds of 72-74-80 for a 10-over total of 226. Owens CC golfer Brandon Hoelzer was the medalist with his 3-under total of 213.

“He excels from 100 yards in,” said MCC Coach Marty McDermott of Shepardson. “I am really proud of him. He worked really hard and this will be a great experience.”

Owens took the team title with 882, followed by Grand Rapids CC 886, Oakland CC 909, Muskegon CC 922, Columbus State 924, Delta College 936, Mott CC 937, Jackson College 962 and St. Clair County CC 970.

The other MCC individual finishes were: Noah Carter (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) tied for 17th with 76-78-77=231; Marcus Fry (Muskegon, MI/Spring Lake) tied for 21st with 81-73-79=233; Tyler Covell (Cedar Springs, MI/Cedar Springs) tied for 37th with 77-77-86=240; Joel Maire (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores) 39th with 81-82-78=241; and Curtis Taylor (North Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon) tied for 55th with 91-88-82=261.

Men’s Golf Fourth at Regionals After Day One

The MCC men’s golf team is currently in fourth place after the first day of the two-day NJCAA Region 12 Championships at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek, Mich.

Owens CC leads the competition with a 582 after two rounds. Grand Rapids CC trails with 594, followed by Oakland CC 606, Muskegon CC 608, Columbus State 610, Delta College 625, Mott CC 627, and Jackson College 635.

MCC’s Oliver Shapardson is fourth overall with his 72-74 for +2 146/ Noah Carter (76-78), Tyler Covell (77-77) and Marcus Fry (81-73) are all tied for 16th with scores of 154. Joel Maire shot 81-82 and is tied for 42nd, while Curtis Taylor carded a 91-88 for 179 and 59th place.

Men’s Golf Finish Third at MCCAA Championships

The Muskegon Jayhawks traveled to Port Huron, Mich. to play in the MCCAA Golf Championship at the Port Huron Elks Golf Course. After the two day event the Jayhawks finished third behind Oakland CC and Grand Rapids CC.

The final individual results were: Freshman Joel Maire (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) – 216 (3rd), sophomore Tyler Covell (Cedar Springs, MI/Cedar Spring HS) – 222 (7th), sophomore Marcus Fry (Muskegon, MI/Spring Lake HS) – 235 (24th), sophomore Ollie Shepardson (Kent City, MI/Kent City HS) – 237 (28th), freshman Noah Carter Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) – 254 (49th),and freshman Curtis Taylor (North Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon) – 258 (52nd).

The final team results were: Grand Rapids CC – 805, Oakland CC – 900, Muskegon CC – 912, Schoolcraft CC – 918, Mott CC – 933, St. Clair CC – 933, Delta CC – 934, Jackson CC – 954, Wayne County CC – 1013, Ancilla College – 1016, and Henry Ford – 1031.

The Jayhawks play next at the NJCAA Region XII Tournament in Battle Creek, Mich. at the Bedford Valley Golf Course Monday and Tuesday, May 12 – 13.

Men’s Golf in Third Place After First Day of MCCAA Championships

The Jayhawks traveled to Port Huron, Mich. to complete in the MCCAA Championships. The tournament is a two-day event starting Monday, May 5th and 6th. After Day one the Jayhawks are in 3rd place and performing well.

The Jayhawks played two rounds today. The final scores for the Jayhawks were: Sophomore Tyler Covell (Cedar Spring, MI/Cedar Spring HS) (73, 74), freshman Joel Marie (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) (75, 72), sophomore Marcus Fry (Muskegon, MI/Spring Lake HS) (77, 77), sophomore Ollie Shepardson (Kent City, MI/Kent City HS) (79, 80), freshman Noah Carter (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) (82, 85), and freshman Curtis Taylor (North Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon HS) (82, 92).

The team standings after day one are: Grand Rapids CC -576, Oakland CC – 606, Muskegon CC – 608, Schoolcraft CC – 615, Delta CC – 620, Mott CC – 620, St. Clair CC – 625, Jackson CC – 634, Ancilla College – 672, Wayne County CC – 676, and Henry Ford CC – 689.

The Jayhawks will compete today in the final round of the MCCAA Championships.

Men’s Golf Finishes Second at Western Conference Tournament

Jayhawks finish second at the Western Conference Tournament in Plymouth, Ind. at the Swan Lake Resort Golf Course. The Jayhawks were led by freshman Joel Maire (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) and sophomore Ollie Shepardson (Kent City, MI/Kent City HS) who earned All-Conference Honors.

MCC played great as Maire shot a (74, 73), sophomore Marcus Fry (Muskegon, MI/Spring Lake HS) shot a (79, 80), while Shepardson followed with a (78, 82), freshman Noah Carter had a (81, 86), and sophomore Tyler Covell (Cedar Springs, MI/Cedar Spring HS) shot two 78’s, and freshman Curtis Taylor (North Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon HS) finished up the Jayhawks with a (81, 78).

The team results were as follows: Grand Rapids CC – 1187, Muskegon CC – 1262, Jackson CC – 1297, and Ancilla College – 1322. The Jayhawks will be in action next at the MCCAA Tournament Monday and Tuesday, May 5th and 6th in Port Huron, Mich.

Golf’s Tyler Covell Runner-up at e Ferris State Invitational

Muskegon Community College traveled to Big Rapids, Mich. to play in the Ferris State Invite and finished Second behind Farris State Gold by five strokes. Sophomore Tyler Covell (Cedar Spring, MI/Cedar Springs HS) was Muskegon’s top individual finishing as the Runner-up with a 77.

The Jayhawk golfers finished with a 320 score. Just behind Covell was freshman Joel Maire (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with an 80, sophomore Ollie Shepardson (Kent City, MI/Kent City HS) with an 81, sophomore Marcus Fry (Muskegon, MI/Spring Lake HS) shot an 82, and freshman Zach Farrell Cedar Springs, MI/Cedar Springs HS) rounded out the top five with an 88. The Jayhawks compete next at the MCCAA Championships in Port Huron, Mich. at the Port Huron Elks Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday, May 5th and 6th.

Golf Finishes 3rd at Western Conference Tournament

The Jayhawks traveled to Plymouth, Ind. to play in the Western Conference tournament Friday, April 25. The Jayhawks finished 3rd with 644. They were three stroke behind Runners-up Jackson CC and 36 strokes behind Grand Rapids CC.

The second round was MCC’s best with their top five golfers with in one stroke of each other.

The Jayhawks will be at the MCCAA Tournament Monday and Tuesday, May 5 & 6. Final results are listed below.

Men’s Golf Second at Jackson Invitational

The Jayhawks took second place at the Jackson CC Invitational in Jackson, Mich. on Monday, April 21. Grand Rapids CC took first with 289, followed by MCC 298, Jackson CC 309 and Ancilla 310.

The Jayhawks were led by freshman Joel Maire (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) and freshman Noah Carter (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) both with a 73.

The strong team performance was also because of the following results: Sophomore Ollie Shepardson (Kent City, MI/Kent City HS) – 76, freshman Curtis Taylor (N. Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon HS) – 76, sophomore Marcus Fry (Muskegon, MI/Spring Lake HS) – 84, Tyler Covell – 89. Zach Farrell shot an 85 competing individually.

The Jayhawks will play next at the Western Conference Tournament at the Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, IN on Friday, April 25. Tee-off time is 8:30am.

Men’s Golf Opens Play in Kentucky

The Muskegon CC men’s golf team opened the season as the only community college entry in the 11-team SVSU Spring Invitational held Saturday-Sunday, March 22-23, at Boone Links GC in Florence, Kentucky.

Grand Valley State University won the tournament with a score of 600, followed by Ashland University and Lewis University tied for second with 607, Wayne State University 613, Saginaw Valley 618,Davis & Elkins College 620, Findlay University 624, Walsh University 630, Bellarmine University 634, Ohio Valley University 637 and Muskegon CC 652.

Findlay’s Marcus Hunt and Ian Clark of Davis & Elkins College tied for medalist honors with two-day totals of 145 each on the par 72, 6,742-yard course. MCC finishers were: Marcus Fry (Muskegon, MI/Spring Lake) and Noah Carter (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) tied for 42nd with 164, Ollie Shepardson (Kent City, MI/Kent City) tied for 52nd with 165, Tyler Covell (Cedar Springs, MI/Cedar Springs) tied for 64th with 173, Zach Farrell (Cedar Springs, MI/Cedar Springs) 68th with 183, and Curtis Taylor (North Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon) 69th with 185

Golfers Finish Behind Owens, Cincinnati St.

The Jayhawk men’s golf squad finished third behind Owens CC and Cincinnati State on Monday, March 24, at the Surge Spring Shootout on Weatherwax Golf Course in Middleton, Ohio.

Owens, led by medalist Harrison Long’s 69, won with 305, while the host Cincinnati State Surge finished with 309.

MCC, which tallied a 313, was led by Marcus Fry (Muskegon, MI/Spring Lake), Joel Maire (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores) and Ollie Shepardson (Kent City, MI/Kent City), who all finished with 78. Tyler Covell (Cedar Springs, MI/Cedar Springs) shot a 79, followed by Noah Carter (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) 82, Zach Farrell (Cedar Springs, MI/Cedar Springs) 86, and Curtis Taylor (North Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon) 87 for Coach Marty McDermott’s Jayhawk team.
