Beka German Becomes MCC’s Second Volleyball All-American

Middle blocker for MCC’s volleyball team,sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) has been named a NJCAA Division II All-American.

Beka is the second Jayhawk Volleyball player in MCC history to be selected as an All American. She averaged 2.43 kills and 0.97 blocks per set. She had 0.41 aces and digs per set, while playing in 157 sets. She hit .243 for the season.

Rykse Named Volleyball Coach of the Year; Players Earn All-Region, All-League Honors

This was a special year for MCC’s Volleyball team. The Jayhawks were 37-7 on the season, MCCAA Runner-ups, and the Region XII Runners-up. Head Coach Rick Rykse was awarded the 2013 MCCAA Western Conference Coach of the Year.

MCCAA Honors were also given to several MCC players. Sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) and freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) were named to the MCCAA All-Region Team. MCCAA First Team All-Conference Honors went to three Jayhawk players: Sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS), Beka German, and Brandie Jones.

Freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) and sophomore Elyse Ray (New Era, MI/West Michigan Christian HS) both received MCCAA Second Team All-Conference while freshman Autumn Winger (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) earned an Honorable Mention All-Conference. Brandie Jones also earned a place on the All-Freshman Team.

Volleyball Finishes Second in Region XIl; Closes with 37-7 Record

The Jayhawks were in Grand Rapids, Mich. Nov. 1-3 playing at the NJCAA Regional XII Championships. The Jayhawks advanced to the Finals of the Region XII volleyball tournament before losing to Grand Rapids CC 3-1; 24-26, 14-25, 25-17, and 23-25. The Jayhawks ended their season with a final record of 37-7 and ranked #5 in the NJCAA. During the tournament the Jayhawks were 4-2 beating Ancilla College 3-0, lost to Vincennes University 1-3, beat Kalamazoo Valley 3-2, beat Sinclair 3-0, and then revenged their earlier lost to Vincennes 3-0 to make the finals.

MCC leaders for the Jayhawks were: freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 16 kills and 18 digs; sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 15 digs and 2 aces; freshman Brooke Morgan (Belmont, MI/Comstock Park HS) with 16 digs; freshman Lindsey Kotecki (Williamston, MI/Williamston HS) with 4 kills, freshman Autumn Winger (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 4 kills and 1 block; freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 7 kills, 40 assists, 11 digs, and 1 block; sophomore Elyse Ray (New Era, MI/Western Michigan Christian HS) with 8 kills and 1 block; and sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 9 kills, 11 digs, 3 blocks and 1 ace.

Beka German and Elyse Ray were selected for the high honor of the All-Tournament Team.

Volleyball Wins at Region XII Championships

The Jayhawks played their first game of the Region XII Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich. at Grand Rapids CC. MCC beat Ancilla College in three straight sets: 25-19, 25-15, and 25-14. The Jayhawks will be playing in the Championships until Sunday, Nov.3, 2013.

Match leaders for the Jayhawks were: freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 10 kills, freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 29 assists, freshman Brooke Morgan (Belmont, MI/Comstock Park HS) with 12 digs, and sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 8 blocks.

The Jayhawks will be in action tomorrow at Grand Rapids CC playing in the second round of the Region XII Championships.

Volleyball Places 2nd at the MCCAA State Tournament

The Jayhawks traveled to Jackson, Mich. to play in the MCCAA State Tournament. The Jayhawks made the Finals by the way of a 3-0 win over St. Clair CC 25/16, 25/15, and 25/16. In the Finals the Jayhawks fell to #4 Oakland 3-2: 25/23, 17/25, 25/22, 22/25, and 7/15

MCC is now 33-5 overall. The Jayhawks leaders of the tournament were: freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 35 kills and 17 digs, freshman Brooke Morgan (Belmont, MI/Comstock Park HS) and sophomore Elyse Ray (Western Michigan Christian HS) both with 5 aces, freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 92 assists, and sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 31 digs.

Jayhawks next match is Friday, Nov. 1 at 4:00 pm. MCC will face Ancilla College at GRCC in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 12 District F playoffs.

Volleyball Wins Western Conference

The Jayhawks played Kalamazoo Valley CC Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Bartels-Rode Gymnasium. With a hard fought 3-0 victory over a very good Kalamazoo Valley team the Jayhawks clinched their first outright conference title in school history. The Jayhawks finish as conference champs with a 13-1 conference record.

Leaders for the Jayhawks were: freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 14 kills, sophomore Elyse Ray (New Era, MI/Western Michigan Christian HS) with 4 aces, freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 38 assists, sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 3 blocks, and sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 13 digs.

MCC will play in the MCCAA State Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Jackson CC in Jackson, Mich. as the #1 seed from the West and will play the winner of the KVCC vs. St. Clair CC. Oakland CC will be the #1 seed from the East and will play the winner of the Grand Rapids vs. Schoolcraft match.

Volleyball Gets Two More Wins

The Jayhawks played in the Kishwaukee College Tournament this weekend in Malta, Illinois. MCC’s first match was against the 20th ranked Morraine Valley CC. The Jayhawks won in three sets: 25-14, 25-22, and 25-19. Their second game was against St. Clair CC and was a tough win for the Jayhawks. MCC won in five sets: 16-25, 25-18, 18-25, 22-25, and 15-10.

The Jayhawks overall record is now 29-4. The Leaders for MCC were: freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 36 kills, freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 86 Assists, freshman Brooke Morgan (Belmont, MI/Comstock Park HS) and freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 3 Aces each, sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 52 Digs, and sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 9 Blocks.

The Jayhawks will play next at home in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium Tuesday, Oct. 22 against Kalamazoo Valley CC, game time is 5pm.

Volleyball Dominates Kellogg CC

The # 8 Jayhawks traveled to Battle Creek, Mich. to play Kellogg CC Tuesday, Oct. 15. MCC won in dominating fashion 3-0. The set match scores were: 25/20, 25/23, and 25-14. The Jayhawks are now 11-1 in the conference and 26-4 overall.

Jayhawks were led by freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 13 kills, sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 18 Digs, sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 2 aces, and freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 35 assists.

The Jayhawks will be home this Thursday, Oct. 17 against Lansing CC. Action will start at 5:00pm in Bartels-Rhode Gymnasium.

Volleyball Defeats Grand Rapids CC in Battle of National Powers

The Jayhawks were at home, in front of a large crowd, at Bartels-Rhode Gymnasium Thursday, Oct. 10. The #8 MCC avenged an early season loss to #7 GRCC 3-1. This puts MCC in first place in the MCCAA West. Set scores were 25/19, 16/25, 31/29, and 25/16. The Jayhawks are now 25-4 overall and 10-1 the conference.

MCC was led by freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 53 assists, sophomore Elyse Ray (New Era, MI/Western Michigan Christian HS) with 3 blocks, freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 18 Kills, and sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 26 digs.

The Jayhawks look to continue their winning ways in Battle Creek, Mich. on Tuesday, Oct. 15 against Kellogg CC.

Volleyball Dominates Lake Michigan College

The Jayhawks traveled to Benton Harbor, Mich. Tuesday, Oct. 8 to play Lake Michigan College. MCC had a dominating performance winning in 3 straight sets 25-9, 25-13, and 25-13. The Jayhawks improved the conference record to 9-1 and their Overall Record to 24-4.

Leading the Jayhawks were freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) 29 assists, 2 aces; freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) 7 kills, 3 aces, 5 digs; and freshman Lindsey Kotecki (Williamston, MI/Williamston HS) 6 kills, 3 digs, 2 blocks.

MCC will be at home in Bartels-Rhodes Gymnasium against Grand Rapids CC. Both teams are nationally ranked. Grand Rapids CC and MCC are currently the #1 and #2 teams in Michigan.

Jayhawk Volleyball Sweeps Ancilla College

The #8 Jayhawks were at home in Bartels-Rhode Gymnasium Thursday Oct. 3 playing against Ancilla College. MCC sweep Ancilla in three straight sets. The Jayhawks outscored Ancilla 25/18, 25/16, and 26/24 and improved to 8-1 in the conference and 23-4 overall.

Volleyball Beats Jackson CC in Four

The Jayhawks traveled to Jackson, Mich. to play Jackson CC Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Jayhawks won in four sets; 25/18, 25/11, 21/25, and 25/21. MCC is now 22-4 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

Freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) led the Jayhawks with 27 kills and 3 aces. While freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) led MCC with 47 assists. Defensively the Jayhawks were led by sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 24 digs and sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 7 blocks.

Volleyball Gets Three More Wins

MCC traveled to Grand Rapids this weekend to compete in the Raider Classic at Grand Rapids Community College on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday Sept 29. The Jayhawks finished 3-1 and have an overall record of 21-5.

The Jayhawks swept Schoolcraft College 27-25, 25-14, and 25-17. Then MCC lost 3-0 to their toughest opponent of the tournament, Oakland CC, by scores of 25-10, 25-18, and 25-23. The Jayhawks rallied back on Sunday with two wins, defeating Genesee CC 25-16, 25-20, and 25-21 and Kishwaukee CC 25-19, 25-14, and 25-15.

MCC’s stat leaders were: Freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 117 assists, Sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 61 digs, freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 43 kills, freshman Brooke Morgan (Belmont, MI/Comstock Park HS) with 12 aces, and sophomore Elyse Ray (New Era, MI/Western Michigan Christian HS) with 10 blocks,. The Jayhawks play next on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Jackson CC in Jackson, Mich.

Tough Win for Volleyball

MCC traveled to Kalamazoo, Mich. Thursday, Sept 26 to play Kalamazoo Valley CC. The #10 Jayhawks defeated Kalamazoo Valley 3-2; 22/25, 25/27, 25/17, 25/23, and 15/9. MCC improved to 6-1 in the conference and 18-3 overall.

The Jayhawk team leaders were: freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) 48 assists, 4 kills, 7 digs, 3 blocks; sophomore Beka German (Fruitport MI/Fruitport HS) 13 kills, 3 aces, 12 digs, 3 blocks; freshman Brandie Jones(Fruitport MI/Fruitport HS) 17 Kills, 2 aces, 15 digs; freshman Autumn Winger (Fruitport MI/Fruitport HS) 9 kills, 3 blocks; sophomore Elyse Ray (New Era, MI/Western Michigan Christian HS) 7 kills, 6 aces, 6 blocks; sophomore Amber Carmean(Fruitport MI/Fruitport HS) 21 digs; and freshman Brooke Morgan (Belmont, MI/Comstock Park HS) 15 digs.

The Jayhawks play next at the Raider Challenge, Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 28 & 29 at GRCC in Grand Rapids, Mich.

#3 Volleyball rolls over Lansing CC

The Jayhawks traveled to Lansing Mich. Tuesday, Sept. 24 looking to improve on their impressive season record. The Jayhawks did just that in a dominating sweep of Lansing CC 25/18, 25/18, and 25/16. The Jayhawks are now 17-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

Freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) and freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) led the Jayhawks offensive attach. Birr had 37 assists, 4 kills, and 9 gigs; while Jones had 15 Kills, 6 digs, 2 blocks.

The Jayhawks will be in action this Thursday, Sept. 26 against Kalamazoo CC in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Volleyball Sweeps Kellogg CC

The third-ranked MCC women’s volleyball team swept past visiting Kellogg CC on Thursday, Sept. 19, in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium.

The Jayhawks won in three straight sets: 25-16, 25-13, and 25-23. MCC improve to an overall record of 16-3 and a conference record of 4-1.

The offensive leaders for MCC were freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 16 Kills, freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 8 kills, sophomore Amber Carmea (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) 3 aces, while sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) and sophomore Elyse Ray (Western Michigan Christian) each had 7 kills. Defensively Carmean lead the team with 11 digs while Jones and Ray had 3 blocks a piece.

The Jayhawks will be in action next week Tuesday, September 24th at Lansing CC in Lansing, MI at 6:30 pm.

Volleyball in a Battle to be the Best

On Tuesday, Sept. 17th the 4th ranked Jayhawks traveled to Grand Rapids to face the 3rd ranked Grand Rapids CC in a battle for the best team in the state. The # 3 Grand Rapids CC d. #4 MCC 3-1, 25/22, 25/16, 24/26, and 27/25. MCC is now 3-1 in their conference and 15-3 overall.

Even with a defeat the Jayhawks played well and had great performances by several players. The Jayhawk Leaders were: freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 22 kills, 3 aces and 27 digs; sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 11 kills and 5 blocks; sophomore Elyse Ray (New Era, MI/Western Michigan Christian HS) with 9 kills and 1 block; freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 48 assists and 13 digs; sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 32 digs and 2 aces; and freshman Lindsey Kotecki Williamston, MI/Williamston HS) with 9 kills and 3 digs.

The Jayhawks will be looking to start a new winning streak this Thursday, Sept. 19th against Kellogg CC in Bartels-Rhodes Gymnasium at 6:30pm.

4th Ranked Volleyball Improves to 15-2

The Jayhawks competed at the Kankakee CC Invitational in Kankakee Ill. Sept. 13th and 14th. MCC finished 2nd place overall in the tournament. The Jayhawks current record stands at 15-2 and are ranked #4 nationally. Sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) and freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

The Jayhawks went 1-1 on Friday. Their first match of the day was against #2 ranked team in the country Parkland. The Jayhawks lost 3-0: 25-13, 30-28, and 25-19. MCC responded back with a three set win against Sauk Valley: 25-14, 25-19, and 25-23. Saturday the Jayhawks kept things rolling with two straight wins. MCC d. Kankakee 3-0: 25-9, 25-20, and 25-14. Then they beat Rock Valley in a close hard fought match 3-2: 22-25, 25-16, 25-15, 21-25, and 15-4.

The Jayhawks leaders on offense were freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) 71 kills, sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) 8 aces, freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) 136 Assists and 7 aces. MCC defense was led by sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) 122 Digs, and sophomore Elyse Ray (New Era, MI/Western Michigan Christian HS) 12 Blocks. The Jayhawks will be in action again this Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6:30 pm in Grand Rapids against Grand Rapids CC.

Tough Test for MCC Volleyball

The Jayhawks traveled to Kankakee, Ill. to play in the Kankakee Tournament Sept. 13th & 14th. MCC started out with a big time challenge facing #2 Parkland in the first round.

#2 Parkland d. #4 MCC 3-0: 25-13, 30-28, 25-19. This is only the second loss for MCC, but it didn’t slow them down. The Jayhawks bounced right back with a victory over Sauk Valley. #4 MCC d. Beat Sauk Valley 3-0: 25-14, 25-19, 25-23 The offensive leaders for MCC were: freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 27 Kills, freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 27 assists, and freshman Autumn Winger (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 4 aces. The defensive leaders were: sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 56 Digs and sophomore Elyse Ray (New Era, MI/Western Michigan Christian HS) with 7 blocks.

The Jayhawks continue play at the Kankakee Tournament today and will play Grand Rapids CC in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, Sept. 17th at 6:30 pm.

Women’s Volleyball Ranked 4th in Nation

The Jayhawks are currently ranked 4th by the latest NJCAA rankings and continuing to win. Tuesday, Sept. 10th MCC traveled to Ancilla College in Donaldson, Ind. MCC d. Ancilla College in three straight sets: 25/22, 25/19, and 25/21.

The offensive leaders for the Jayhawks were sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 14 Kills and 2 Aces and freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 29 Assists. On the Defensive side sophomore Elyse Ray (New Era, MI/ Western Michigan Christian HS) had 3 Blocks while sophomore Amber Carmean (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) set a MCC – 3 game match record with 29 Digs.

The Volleyball team will be at home this Thursday, Sept. 12th against Lake Michigan College in Bartels-Rhode Gymnasium at 5:00pm.

Volleyball Improves to 10-1 Overall

The Muskegon Community College volleyball team continued to shine in its win over Jackson CC 25-15, 25-22, and 25-18 on Thursday night, Sept. 5, in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium.

Freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) lead the team in in two categories with 13 kills and 16 digs. Helping the Jayhawks to victory was freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) with 28 assists. Sophomore Lindy Szilagyi (Rosebush, MI/ Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart HS) lead the team with two aces while the defensive leader was freshman Stephanie Sedgewick (Grand Haven, MI/ Grand Haven HS) with 4 blocks.

The Jayhawks will be looking to improve on their 10-1 record Tuesday, September 10 @ Ancilla College, Donaldson, Ind. The game starts at 6:30pm.

Volleyball Off to a 9-1 Start

The Jayhawks won five of six matches, including three against nationally ranked foes, on Friday-Sunday, Aug. 30-Sept. 1, at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio.

Now 9-1 overall, MCC d. Edison CC 3-0 and #17 Illinois Central 3-2 on Sunday. The Jayhawks will look to continue their winning ways this Thursday at Bartels-Rode Gymnasium at 5pm against Jackson CC.

Volleyball Improves to 7-1

The Jayhawk Volleyball team, competing at the Owens CC Tournament in Toledo, Ohio, opened play on Friday, Aug. 30, by defeating Iowa Central 3-1 before suffering its first loss of the season by a 3-0 margin to Columbus State 3-0. On Saturday, Jayhawks defeated two nationally ranked teams, #10 Kishwaukee CC 3-1 and #7 Moraine Valley CC 3-0.

Volleyball Perfect at Oakland CC Tournament

The Jayhawks swept past all four Oakland CC Tournament opponents on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23-24, including two Top 15 squads, to start the 2013 season a perfect 4-0.

On Friday, MCC d. #4 Owens 19-25, 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10 and MCC d. Macomb 25-17, 25-12, 25-18. On Saturday, MCC d. Alpena 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 before downing #15 Mott 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-27, 15-13.

Freshman Amber Carmen (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) set a school record with 41 digs in the five-set win over Mott CC and freshman Brandie Jones (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Jones paced MCC with 48 kills.

Freshman Meghan Birr (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores HS) led MCC with 128 assists. Carmen had a team-high 100 digs. Leading MCC in blocks and aces was sophomore Beka German (Fruitport, MI/Fruitport HS) with 18 and 10, respectively.

The Lady Jayhawks travel to Toledo, Ohio next weekend to complete in the Owens Community College Tournament.
