The Jayhawk Baseball team enjoyed a productive day with 2 wins over the visiting Alpena Community College Lumberjacks, 19-0 (5 innings) and 11-2.
In the opener Cady Matuz (Fruitport) threw a gem for the home team, allowing no runs on 2 hits, 10 strikeouts and only 1 walk. He got all the offense he needed when the Jayhawks scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. MCC scored in all 4 innings, ending with a 9 spot in the bottom of the 4th. Bryce Lesher (St. Joe) carried the big bat as he finished 2-2 with 5 RBI including a grand slam. Kenton Vander Wal (W. Michigan Aviation Academy) was 2-4 with 4 RBI and Sam Mitcham (Sinclair Secondary, Canada) added a homerun and picked up 2 RBI.
In game 2 Colton Blankstrom (Montague) picked up the win with 6 innings of work. The righthander surrendered 2 runs on 8 hits with 8 strikeouts and no walks. Tanner Tresemer (Zeeland) hit a 2 run homerun in the 1st inning and the Jayhawks never looked back as they scored runs in all but the 5th inning. Luke Linder (Traverse City Central), Lesher and Abdiel Gonzalez (Lake Orion) all had 2 hits. MCC also stole 11 bases led by Vander Wal with 3.
MCC returns to the field looking for a season sweep over Alpena on Saturday, 4/8 at 11:00 am. They will also play Ivy Tech Community College in a single game at 3:00 pm.
