Muskegon Community College took advantage of their rivalry with Grand Rapids Community College to earn a 76-74 victory over the first place Raiders in Grand Rapids.
This was the 4th game in 6 days for the Jayhawks but they were ready and focused from tipoff. They used a couple of quick 3 pointers to grab the lead and they were able to extend it to 23-13 midway through the half. GRCC made a run at the end of the half but MCC maintained a slim 37-36 lead. The second half started with a 5-0 run by GRCC but MCC answered with a 16-0 run of their own to grab the lead for good. GRCC was able to tie the game at 74 with 40 seconds left, but a Josh Smith (Lansing Waverly HS) tip in off a missed proved to be the winning basket.
Kylan Shipp (Detroit Northwestern HS) led all scorers with 24 points. He also added 8 rebounds, 4 assists and was able to knock down 6 three pointers. Travez Nyx (Wayne Memorial HS) had 12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal. Smith added 11 rebounds and 5 blocks and Jacarius Scott (Muskegon HS) added 14 points and had 2 clutch threes towards the end of the game.
MCC is now 6-6 in conference play and 11-10 overall. They return to action on Wednesday, 2/13 with a home game vs. Kellogg Community College. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
