Muskegon Community College wrapped up the 5th seed in the upcoming NJCAA Region XII Tournament with a 106-101 overtime victory over Lake Michigan College.
MCC exploded offensively in the first half with the help of Jacarius Scott, who scored 10 of the Jayhawks first 12 points. He was able to connect on 2 triples and a few strong drives to rim to get his team started. Simon Obi also had a great start to the game with two fast break dunks. As good as the Jayhawks offense was clicking, their defense played just as well. They forced the Red Hawks to shoot 32% from the field, 14 turnovers and only allowed them 31 points for the half. The score at halftime was 41-31 in favor of the Jayhawks. The second half was a much different game for the Jayhawks. They allowed Lake Michigan to stay within striking distance until the Red Hawks were able to make a run late into the game. Defensively, the Jayhawks allowed their opponent to score 57 points. A big part of that was the Red Hawks ability to hit 10 three pointers and grab 11 offensive rebounds in the half. Giving up second chance points really hurt the Jayhawks towards the end of the game. Lake Michigan was able to tie the game at 86-86 with 40 seconds left in the game. The Jayhawks turned the ball over the following possession, which allowed LMC to take a 2 point lead with 21 seconds left in the game. The Jayhawks took a timeout to setup a iso play for Kylan Shipp, who was able to execute perfectly with a strong finish at the rim. The 2 point basket tied the game for the Jayhawks and sent the game into overtime.
Overtime started out with both teams going back in forth for the first few minutes of OT. Eventually, the Jayhawks were able to take control of the game with a big 3 pointer from Josh Smith and some big time defensive stops. The Jayhawks outscored LMC 18-13 in overtime. Taking home a 106-101 victory. All five starters for the Jayhawks scored in double figures. They were led by Kylan Shipps triple double. He finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 5 steals. Jacarius Scott led the Jayhawks in scoring with 25 points and 8 rebounds.
