The Jayhawks outscored Oakland Community College 109-96 for victory #3 on the season.
Oakland CC came into the contest with the best scoring average in the nation at 108 points per game, but MCC held them to only 13 minutes in the first 10 minutes of the half. The Jayhawks took a 46-37 lead into the locker room at the half. In the second half both teams struggled to get stops on defense while continuing to score on offense. The Raiders pulled to within 4 points, but the Jayhakws answered each time for the margin of victory.
Sophomore Jacarius Scott (Muskegon HS) led all scorers with 36 points. Sophomore Josh Smith (Lansing Waverly HS) came off the bench and battled an injury to score 15 points and pull down a team high 9 rebounds, while Sophomore Travez Nyx (Wayne Memorial HS) dished out a team high 9 assists and scored 7 points. Freshman Simon Obi (Romulus HS) added 16 points with back up big man Sheldon Tobar (Watervliet HS) played excellent minutes scoring 8 points.
“I’m very proud of the way we came out and played together as a team,” said Head Coach Jimmy Booth. “Nobody cared who got credit just as long as the job got done and it was evident based on our 23 team assists. I’m not happy with the way we defended in the second half but I’m proud of the guys and it was a good win.”
MCC is now 3-3 in non-conference action. They return to the court on Saturday, 12/8 with a 7:30 pm tip off at Alpena Community College.
