The Muskegon Community College Women’s Basketball team opened NJCAA National Championship play with a 75-62 victory over #4 seed Illinois Central College.

The team is staying focused on what Coach Cooper calls the 3p’s; Poise, Passion, and Power. In the pre-game locker room meeting he reiterated the goal they have been working towards since the start of the season; building the program and leaving a legacy.

MCC and ICC battled to a 14-14 tie after the first quarter and the second quarter was just as competitive, with MCC claiming a 1 point lead at the half, 32-31. The Jayhawks came out of the locker room and outscored the Cougars 19-14 and they continued to pull away in the fourth for the final margin of victory.

“It was a great win today,” said Coach Cooper after the game. “This is a big win for our girls and Muskegon Community College!”

All five starters scored in double digits for MCC with Freshman Calla Miller (Fremont) leading the way with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Trina Lewis (Reeths-Puffer) had 14 points, a team high 9 rebounds and 3 steals followed by 11 points from Suzan Sisman (Marselisborg, Denmark) and Julia Tierman (Mona Shores). Tierman handed out 5 assists and grabbed 5 rebounds and Sisman added 3 assists. Mariah Pringle (Brethren) finished with 10 points. The Jayhawks also got big contributions from Ally Seiber (Reeths-Puffer), Karleigh Jeffries (Whitehall) and Sydney Bol (Fruitport) off the bench.

Next up is a 8:00 pm game on Thursday, 3/17 vs. #5 seed Bryant & Stratton College in the Quarterfinal round.
