The Jayhawks traveled to Mott Community College for the MCCAA State Championships, which featured the top two teams from the Eastern Conference vs. the top two teams in the Western Conference.
The second match of the day featured the home team Bears from Mott vs. the Jayhawks from Muskegon. Although Mott was able to win the first set by a score of 25-23 the Jayhawks came roaring back and swept sets 2, 3 and 4 by scores of 25-19, 25-8, 25-10. The Jayhawks racked up some pretty big offensive numbers as they finished with 60 kills while hitting .302 as a team. Julie Brown (Whitehall HS) led the way with 16 kills followed by Jaren Smith (Shelby HS) with 15 and Amber Jacobs (Ravenna HS) with 9. Katie Veihl (Fruitport HS) dished out 50 assists while also adding 5 kills and 13 digs. Defensively Shelby Rasch (Coopersville HS) controlled the back row with 28 digs while Kennedi Bernia (Grand Haven HS) had 18 digs and Haley Gartland (Mona Shores HS) had 12. Maddie Heiss (Western Michigan Christian HS) was a force at the net with 3 blocks and 7 kills while Alexis Issette (Chippewa Hills HS) contributed 6 kills and 2 blocks.
In the finals it was the #12 ranked team from Grand Rapids Community College against the #13 ranked Jayhawks. Once again it was a close battle but the Jayhawks came up on the short end of the score losing 3-1. Set scores were 25-11, 25-22, 23-25. 25-19. Sets 2,3 and 4 saw the lead go back and forth many times with each team getting the lead but then seeing the opposing team come back. Set 4 was close the whole way only to see Grand Rapids finish with a strong run to close out the match. Leaders in the finals were:

Digs- Rasch 21, Bernia 16, Jacobs 11, Veihl 8.

The Jayhawks are now 29-10 on the season. They return to action on Thursday, 11/1 when they travel to Port Huron for the Regional XII Championship Tournament vs.KVCC at 6:00 pm.
