The Jayhawk Women’s basketball team lost for only the second time this season to the Delta Pioneers in University Center, MI by a score of 61-59.
The first quarter was slow for both teams, but MCC used their post play to take a 18-9 lead. In the second quarter they Jayhawks held a 15 point advantage at one point and a 30-18 lead at the half. The Pioneers picked up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and used the press to cause turnovers. They were able to cut into the lead, but MCC still held a 44-38 advantage. The intensity picked up for both teams in the fourth with Delta grabbing a 51-50 lead with 3:37 left. MCC tied the game at 59 but committed a foul with 6 seconds left and Delta scored both free throws for the final.
Sophomore, Mariah Pringle (Brethren HS) led the Jayhawks with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Nia Miskell (Muskegon HS) had another double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Kacy Jeffries (Whitehall HS) also had 10 points and 7 rebounds.
“It was a tough loss tonight,” said Head Coach Jason Cooper. “We didn’t come ready to play and Delta did.”
The Jayhawks are 5-0 in conference play and 7-2 overall. They return to the court with a home contest on Friday, 3/19 vs. Glen Oaks Community College. Game time is 5:30 pm and the game will broadcast on MCC TV live.
