The MCC women’s basketball team defeated host Henry Ford College 51-43 in the last non-conference game on their schedule.
It was evident from the start that the Jayhawks were coming off a long break. Henry Ford led after the first quarter, 12-11 but MCC was able to capitalize on defensive rebounding for a 24-22 lead at the half. Both teams continued to battle in the third quarter but the game stayed close with the Jayhawks up 34-32 heading to the final quarter. MCC finally started playing to their abilities and they were able to use defensive pressure for steals leading to fast break baskets. The Jayhawks finished the game with 9 steals and 9 blocks.
Tanae Hamer (Hudsonville HS) led the Jayhawks with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Iyana Brown (Fruitport HS) followed with 12 points and 6 rebounds and Yasmine Colon (Hart HS) grabbed a game high 13 boards and added 11 points.
“It was a good win on the road tonight,” said head Coach Jason Cooper. “Our team defense was good, we just need to knock down some perimeter shots to improve our offensive output.”
The Jayhawks take an 8-1 record into conference play when they host Mid Michigan college on Saturday, 1/4. Tip off is 1:00 pm.
