The Jayhawk Women’s Basketball team defeated Grand Rapids Community College 70-50 and for the second year in a row, they will compete in the NJCAA National Tournament to be held at St. Clair County Community College on 3/15-19/22.
The two teams played a tight first quarter, with MCC holding a slight 18-16 advantage. In the second quarter MCC put up 20 points to GRCC’s 14 for a 38-30 half time lead. The Jayhawk defense held the Raiders to 8 points in the 3rd and 12 in the 4th as they pulled away for the victory.
“I am so excited about what this team has done,” said Head Coach Jason Cooper. “They have fought through adversity and came out on top!”
Calla Miller (Fremont) led the Jayhawk offense with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Suzan Sisman (Marselisborg, Denmark) and Julia Tierman (Mona Shores) both contributed 13 points and Mariah Pringle (Brethren) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks. The Jayhawks also got strong efforts from Trina Lewis (Reeths-Puffer) with 8 points, 9 boards and 2 steals and Karleigh Jeffries (Whitehall) who grabbed a team high 10 rebounds.
The Jayhawks improve to 24-4 on the season. They will move on to National Tournament Play the week of March 14. More info will be coming soon.
