The Muskegon Community College Women’s basketball team traveled to Glen Oaks Community College and defeated the Vikings 66-39.
The game got off to a rocky start for the Jayhawks due to a technical before the jump ball that impacted the team energy. The Vikings battled hard in the paint and shut down the Jayhawk post players but the Jayhawks finished the first quarter ahead 16-10. In the second quarter the Jayhawk bench brought some needed energy but the pace was slow for both teams. Even though the Jayhawk offense stuggled the defense was solid and they held GOCC to a single basket for a 24-12 half time lead. In the third quarter the Jayhawks came out with a three-quarter court press that forced turnovers and the third quarter ended with a 46-25 Jayhawk lead and MCC closed out the game from there.
Elysia Mattos (Reeths-Puffer HS) was the leading scorer for the Jayhawks with 14 points. Post player Delaney Bolles (Reeths-Puffer HS) pulled down 19 rebounds and scored 11 points and Shaina Figures (Ottawa Hills HS) grabbed 10 rebounds. Yasmine Colon (Hart HS) was also in double figure scoring with 10.
“It’s always great to get a win on the road,” said Head Coach Jason Cooper. “Our game significantly improved the second half. We will need to compete the whole game with intensity and energy to win on Monday against Mid Michigan.”
MCC remains in a tie for first with Lake Michigan College at 14-2 in the conference and 22-3 overall. Mid Michigan comes into the Bartels-Rode Gymnasium for a rare match up on Monday, 2/25. Tip off is 5:30 pm.
