Muskegon Community College opened the 2018-19 campaign with a 72-69 overtime loss at Grace Christian University.
The Jayhawks trailed 33-27 at halftime but rallied for a 45-40 lead after three periods. The 4th period was back and forth and with 46 seconds in regulation Elysia Mattos (Reeths-Puffer HS) knocked down a big 3 pointer to tie the game. MCC had a chance to win in regulation but missed some key free thows to force the extra period. Grace hit a big 3 to put them up and they held on for the win.
The Jayhawks outscored GCU 28-20 in the paint. They were led by freshman forward Shaina Figures (Ottawa Hills HS) with 20 points and 19 rebounds. Sophomore center Delaney Bolles (Reeths-Puffer HS) had 15 points and 15 rebounds, while guard Mattos added 10 points.
“I’m very proud of how the team played,” said first year Coach Jason Cooper. “We just need to get comfortable playing with each other and make our free throws. “
The Jayhawks are 0-1 overall. They return to action with a home contest vs. St. Clair County Community College on Saturday, 11/10. Tip off is 1:00 pm.
