Despite the challengers that come with the unpredictable winter weather, the #14 ranked Jayhawks were able to hold off the Ancilla Chargers for a 58-50 home victory.
Both teams started slowly and after the first quarter the score was tied at 14. Ancilla’s defense prevented MCC from scoring in the post but neither team could get untracked on offense and the score was 29-24 in favor of MCC at the half. The third quarter continued to be challenging for both offenses with MCC scoring only 8 but holding Ancilla to 7 for a 37-31 lead after three. In the fourth MCC was able to hold off a late charge with some timely free throws for the big conference win.
Delaney Bolles (Reeths-Puffer HS) again led the team with a double double of 17 points and 17 rebounds. Elysia Mattos (Reeths-Puffer HS) followed with 10 points and Shaina Figures (Ottawa Hills HS) again proved her strength down low as she ripped 11 rebounds and scored 8.
“It was a good win against a very good team,” said Head Coach Jason Cooper. “We didn’t play well tonight but we found a way to pull it off.”
MCC stands at 10-1 at the top of the Western Conference and 18-2 overall. Next up is a rivalry game at Grand Rapids Community College on Friday, 2/8 at 5:30 pm.
