Muskegon Community College defeated Kalamazoo Valley Community College 89-69.
The Jayhawks got off to a slow start while the Cougars came out with high energy, knocking down 3 point shots and breaking down the Jayhawk’s defense. The first quarter ended with the Cougars ahead 28-16. MCC was able to put together a run to eliminate the KVCC lead in the second quarter and the two teams traded baskets but it was KVCC with a slight 43-42 advantage at the half. In the third quarter the Jayhawks were able to pick up the intensity and played together on the way to a 63-54 lead and they were able to pull away in the fourth quarter for the conference victory.
Point guard Elysia Mattos (Reeths-Puffer HS) led the Jayhawks on the scoreboard with 21 points. Yasmine Colon (Hart HS) contributed 17 points, Artrese Williams (Reeths-Puffer HS) put in 15 points, and Mariah Pringle (Brethren HS) added 11 points. Center Delaney Bolles (Reeths-Puffer HS) had another double-double pulling down 18 rebounds to go with her 11 points on the night.
“Great conference win tonight,” said Head Coach Jason Cooper. “We started out lacking focus in the first half but the second half was a different story. We played better on both sides of the ball and came together as a team.”
MCC continues to co-lead the Western Conference with a 13-2 record. They are 21-3 overall. Next up is a trip to Glen Oaks Community College on Saturday, 2/23 for a 1:00 pm game.
