The Jayhawks won the battle for first place in the Western Conference over the Red Hawks from Lake Michigan College by a score of 51-48.
Both teams came prepared to battle and that was evident by the low scoring in the first and second quarters. The game was tied at 24 at halftime and there was no let up in the intensity in the second half. After three quarters it was Lake Michigan with a 37-35 lead. In the fourth quarter the Jayhawks were able to take advantage of some free throws and at the end of the game it was MCC who held on for the win.
Delaney Bolles (Reeths-Puffer HS) led MCC with 16 points and 12 boards, even though she battled foul trouble for most of the game. Elysia Mattos (Reeths-Puffer HS) contributed 14 points and Shaina Figures (Ottawa Hills HS) pulled down a team high 13 rebounds and scored 8 points.
“What a great team win for us today,” said Head Coach Jason Cooper. “It was a back and forth defensive battle but we were able to find a way to win.”
MCC is now 9-1 in conference play and ranked #14 in the latest NJCAA polls. Up next is a matchup at home with Ancilla College on Wednesday, 2/6. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
