The Muskegon Community College Women’s Basketball Team is the sole champion of the MCCAA Western Conference after defeating the Grand Rapids Community College Raiders 55-53 in the last game of conference play.
The Raiders jumped out to an early lead and the Jayhawks struggled to play to their capabilities, with the Raiders holding a 22-10 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Jayhawks were able to hold GRCC to only 8 points, while scoring 13, but they were still down 30-23 at half time. The third quarter was more of the same as the Jayhawks missed easy layups and struggled to rebound. GRCC held a 46-35 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. MCC played locked down defense to hold the Raiders to 7 points. Finally with 1:19 left on the clock, the Jayhawks tied the game on two free throws from Sophomore Mariah Pringle, then with 33 seconds remaining Pringle was fouled on an inbounds play with two more free throws. GRCC attempted a last second shot that was no good, and the Jayhawks prevailed.
“What a fantastic team win tonight,” said Head Coach Jason Cooper. “I’m proud of the perseverance and determined attitude that was displayed late in the game”.
Pringle (Brethren HS) led the Jayhawks with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Nia Miskel (Muskegon HS) followed with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Tanae Hamer (Hudsonville HS) and Julia Tierman (Mona Shores HS) each contributed 11 points.
The Jayhawks are 12-2 overall and 8-0 in conference play. The team’s next game will be on Thursday April 8th when they host the winner of Metro League #4 and North League #3. The regional tournament game will be in Bartels-Rode Gymnasium at 7:00 pm.
